Sparkchaser There are some things I will only tolerate as a real printed book. I also tend to like newspapers and print magazines, but these days, the interesting stuff can be hard to find, if it’s even still in print.
However, I really do enjoy my e-reader, as well. I will say that the current generation are far ahead of those from years past. The display quality is much better, with substantially sharper text and faster screen refresh, while still providing much better battery life than a tablet. For extended reading, e-Ink beats the usual display panels easily.
Another great convenience is that they now allow you to read bibliographic entries from the text by tapping the citation, without having to change page. This means that there is no flipping back and forth, and no chance of losing your place. The software now makes it easier to find where you were, if you do advance by a number of pages, by having navigation links, such as “go back to page xx”.
For things I am likely to only read once and/or don’t want to have sitting around on a shelf, it’s great. Also, in some cases, the electronic versions can be substantially less expensive than even a used book. If only we could get rid of the ridiculous prices of some e-books from greedy publishers, and eliminate the possibility that the device vendor can remove items you’ve paid for from your library, it would be even better.
