Does my Xfinity 1 gbps plan qualify for the XB10?

I keep reading that Comcast is rolling this modem out to DOCSIS 4.0 areas (I have no idea if I’m in one). If I were in such an area, would my Xfinity 1 gig plan qualify me for this modem, or is it for 2 gig and above only? I tried asking Gemini and Copilot and they kept throwing up conflicting answers. Thanks.

Ewwwwww! That would send me running SCREAMING away from that building!

Each unit should be able to have its own internet access with its own dedicated router, always. For security, privacy and performance reasons. It’s absurd that Comcast is pushing this and I hope building owners don’t bite too much.

Comcast is offering this as an option to property owners. And some property owners see that as a great choice (for their property). FWIW at least some other ISPs also have special combos for property owners for entire property coverage like this. Typically this is something such that the property offers “free”[0] Internet for the community, included in your lease (whether they also allow you to install your own service may depend on the community and existing infrastructure). There are some (especially very old) properties where installing wires to each residence is essentially so expensive and requires so much permitting to make it impossible in practice, and remember that for MDUs the property owner almost always is required to pay for the installation (although BIF may be an option in some of those locations to reduce some costs and permitting, but it is still expensive).

Those individuals who want different options and have a choice likely choose different properties.

[0] It is not free. Those who lease are paying for the service.

accessable WiFI throuhout a building/across a property. no different then using a secure hotspot at starbucks or Mcdonald’s….

very common in low income multifamily, and high end highrise communities .
I also would choose/can afford a private network/internet in my home.
BUT having a managed ubiquitous connection is common, by mobile and wifi providers

Tshirt Whaaaa?! Are they pushing for that for apartments, condos, and duplexes?! That raises all kinds of red flags for me! How would security be handled? Everyone in the building would have to use the same wifi password. There would be zero privacy unless everyone used a VPN. Bad idea!

Similar to how the CableWifi network on the majority of Comcast (Charter, Cox, and Altice) gateways the last decade allows for individual logins (also automatically by their cell services) to those authorized.

MacLeech OK. That’s good to know. But the other thing that would deter me from using it would be the shared bandwidth. Wouldn’t so many people on a single node make it run like molasses in January?

I cant tell if it supports ethernet backhaul or not. Its conceivable a large MDU / Apartment Complex / etc. could be served by Comcast Metro Ethernet, that’s connected to these apartment installed units via Ethernet backhaul to a switch at the apartments IDF room.

It claims 2 ethernet ports and 1 POTS port. I see two yellow and a grey, but I also see a teal something or other and another connector. I imagine one may be for a battery backup, or maybe ones a backhaul and there’s a coax output for moca? I can’t find any close up picture of the ports.

If not ethernet backhaul, then they would be doing wireless mesh, which certainly isnt as good.

The tenant still gets to setup their own wifi name and password.
