I unexpected lost power for about an hour. It turns out that a teenager hit a telephone pole down the street from me.
He was OK, but the car took out a fire hydrant and a telephone pole at the base. That’s tough to do, but he did it.
According to a neighbor, the driver said that he swerved to avoid a man in the middle of the road. Then, he changed his story to say it was a dog. Two neighbors said nothing was on the street at the time and the kid was probably driving and texting.
The police and utility guys were on this immediately.
I didn’t know this, but the neighbor told me that fire hydrants were designed to be snapped off by cars driving over them. No water was coming out of the fire hydrant water pipe, so the design worked as intended.
Several of my neighbors have generators which kicked on as soon as the power dropped. I have a portable generator. Since power was only expected to be out for a few hours, I didn’t bother to set it up.
