When Covid-19 emerged it was widely blamed on markets in China where different breeds of wild animal are kept caged and often slaughtered close to other animals. Meat is sold at the open-air stalls.

Not *all*. MERS, for one is from the middle east, ebola and some others are from Africa, etc.

They are coming out from areas where humans and wildlife have close encounters, either by wet market, bush meat, or just simply being in the same area.

The recent defunding of bird flu vaccine development could delay mitigation of human infection and spread by a variant. Proposals to require long term double blind inactive placebo studies before approval would add years to containment.

These factors would also be favorable for those who would employ biological warfare.

I’m not familiar with either chinese or african cuisine, but as far as I know, I think meat is cooked more often than not.

Well, in the case of the 2014-15 ebola epidemic, it was a presumed no direct contact pickup – nothing to do with bush meat or sanitation.

Researchers from the Robert Koch Institute believe that the index case was a one or two-year-old boy who lived in the remote village of Meliandou, Guéckédou located in the Nzérékoré Region of Guinea. Researchers believe that the boy was said to have contracted the virus while he was playing near a tree that was a roosting place for Angolan free-tailed bats infected with the virus.

There are other, somewhat more common diseases with similar symptoms, and they didn’t know that it was ebola until the DNA was sequenced in Europe, partly because hemorrhage was not seen in many patients. With previous ebola outbreaks hemorrhage was essentially universal, but not with that particular strain.
