egeezer I have had three smallpox vaccinations. Once as an infant, once entering Grade 1 (mandatory - the first vaccination was not recognized by the province I was living in for school admission and it was not administered by a doctor from that province) and once as a teenager and was travelling.

After major foot surgery I was placed in a so called extended care facility while there they had a very sever and major Covid out break and while almost all had from a 10 day to 3 week recovery period and even with having all the current Covid vaccine boosters I caught Covid but mine was only an extremely mild 3 day illness. So yes the Vaccines and Boosters Work

Makary and Prasad did not provide any data analysis or evidence-based reasoning for why additional trials would be needed to continue seasonal approvals. In fact, the commentary had a total of only eight references, including an opinion piece Makary published in Newsweek and a New York Times article.

digitalfutur The new policy is actually quite similar to the current (2025) recommendations in Canada and Europe, though the underlying conditions for those two are more specifically mentioned, and in Canada also include certain disadvantaged groups. Given the current risks and previous exposures, it isn’t necessary nor desirable for universal adult vaccine recommendation for Covid. It was at one point, but that point has long passed, as reflected in the science.

This does not look to be the case. While Prasad and Makary provided a table trying to make it appear that it was the same as other countries. The table they provided is, as expected with those two, misleading. These two have spent the last 5 years using the veneer of science to promote their agenda, and themselves. But what they are engaging in is more like policy-based evidence-making.

This certainly couldn’t have anything to do with influencers, including the very people that are now running the show such as Bhattacharya, Makary, and Prasad, who spent the entire pandemic telling people it was just a cold, treated vaccine side effects as a fate worse than death, mocked people who wanted to get a booster (even though the booster was shown to be effective using the very randomized control trials that they are now demanding be done again), told people that we had herd immunity back in 2021, and that they wanted people infected.

This is a valid statistical point, but it doesn’t mean that we should just fire all the lifeguards at that pool.

If we say “younger folks don’t need vaccines because they have better innate immunity”, and if we also say “older folks don’t need vaccines because they won’t benefit that much anyway”, then why bother with anyone at all?

And of course that is exactly the position of some people.

However, as a geezer just north of you, I had the shot, got Covid ( who knows what variant). Minor symptoms and wouldn’t have thought of it as anything more than a cold but for the Covid test.
