RANT: Being Oblivious

Right now in New Jersey there is a massive strike by the railroad engineers who power NJ Transit.

Hundreds of thousands of commuters take these trains every day, both within the state and also to get to NYC.

Today many people showed up at train stations, totally unaware that there was a strike.

Somehow, the managed to ignore ALL the messaging (TV, Radio, major social media sites, Newspapers, Announcements at all the train stations)….

The strilke has been expected for WEEKS…

It’s been ALL OVER, probably even waking up dead people in the cemetery to make sure they knew.

So HOW were people ignorant—ESPECIALLY the people who DO take the train everyday.

Such people cannot contribute meaningfully to social discourse.

LIKEWISE:

I recently spoke with a woman in her 30’s who, even AFTER the Papal Election, was not aware that the OLD Pope had DIED many days earlier.

And I think that she was Catholic…

Are these people just on video games all day, or what?

My wife and I have been wondering the same thing. IDK, they must not watch/subscribe to any live local news sources.

I have always been amazed at people that have no clue. It is not a new thing, 20 years ago I would see the same thing “I don’t watch the news, or read a paper, or etc….”

The underinformed and complacent have put us where we are.

I worked in a grocery store for a few years and it shocked me that not a single coworker could understand the concept of the Hubble Telescope, and many didn’t believe there was such a thing. Even my manager was uninformed. He also thought my past work experience in tech was a falsehood.

Stuck in their phones playing games are addicted to sex stuff.

Parents today are doing the poorest job in a few generations. They don’t set by example and they always claim their little angels can do no wrong in school. I know differetnly.

Not sure about this BUT since January some of us have avoided a lot of the news we used to watch. That said I still have a decent grasp of what’s happening around me. Even for a Geezer! 😃

That’s a sign of the times, a case example of what has changed in our societies from the old days, for better or for worse.

Now I’m not saying that ‘we’ have a duty to do that today but it’s a fact that people have stopped consuming mainstream news and replaced it with ‘alternative news’ for various reasons and this is the unfortunate outcome.

It’s even worse here in Canada where we can no longer see the news on social media. I missed out on a few events last summer in our city because our country is censored on Facebook.

It is technically not censored, except by Facebook themselves. They chose to block all news in response to Bill C18:

“Bill C-18, now the Online News Act, is a Canadian law designed to create a fairer compensation system for news organizations whose content is shared on large digital platforms like search engines and social media. It aims to ensure that platforms negotiate fairly with news businesses and compensate them for the economic value generated by their content. ”

urbanriot There are alternative sources of event news than Facebook, and it’s odd that even organizers would only use Facebook for event news, since it’s “censored”. Sounds like disorganization to me.
