First, when you quote, please do not attribute someone else's post to me -- I'm actually arguing that I'm not aware of anything "nefarious".
Now I can't speak for everyone, but most of us have posted our concerns and to be careful when using the website. We have no idea what is going on. Everything was handle in secret. The site drops off the face of the planet.
Strange, weird, hard to explain -- yes. But nefarious would imply something way beyond that such as trying to pass on a virus, load some scareware, or do something unethical/illegal with user information.
We then get a home page of DSLR but nothing could be done with it at first. Then we get to access the site for about 5-10 minutes and then get cut off. Now we could be wrong and nothing is suspect. However, I would still error on the side of being cautious.
One simple explanation is that some people are working on it, possibly using less capable hardware than previously. so they don't want to provide full access.
This entire situation with the website is suspicious. I mean most website that I use, if the website was going to shutdown will tell the people using that website that the site will be no longer available after a perticular date.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I think for the last few years it was a completely 'free' (well, ad-supported) website, so they do not have a whole lot obligations. They could've handled it a bit better, but maybe there was some reason why they did it that way.
The only other times I have seen a website jump off the face of the earth is when the company went bankrupt, or the owners gave up. (Which could apply to DSLR)
I've seen more than one website vanish into the aether without any previous notification and subsequent trace whatsoever, although none of them had a user-base comparable to DSLR.
