All that might mean is the server techs are in the process of wiping the servers preparing them to be repurposed for actual good paying customers.

Seems unlikely. If you're getting rid of a server at address X, it doesn't seem to make any sense to run a server at address X. If it's a VM, just nuke the VM. If it's just a tenant in some other server, deconfigure it. The only 'wiping' to be done would be if dedicated hardware were involved, which I'd guess is unlikely given the assumed size of the DSLR hosting budget.

cypherstream It would be nice if they tried to make it right by having it up for a week so we can reach out to all the people we missed, but I think Hanlon's razor applies here.

I emphatically do not have experience running large websites, but is it possible that someone had a backup somewhere, and was able to pass the torch, (or take the torch) and move it to a new home? I can dream, but I don't think it's likely.

And they would have to deal with:

1) A lot of disgruntled people.
2) A lot of people who have moved on.

InternetJeff Most of those pronouncements were just speculation about its future. Between the long-time gateway error followed by the "page not available" it was understandably believed that it was gone for good. This "on vacation" page took everyone by surprise. This explains why the Wikipedia page was updated so often, though some of that was internet vandalism.

To be honest, I don't know where those who posted about missed bill payments and the like got that information from. I've always been a bit skeptical of those posts as they weren't backed up by reliable proof.

The server is up and running with nginx and SSL security (port 443). It's a 'down for maintenance' placeholder while the site admins do whatever they want.

Here is a current "Isitdown Right Now" Image emphasis is mine for clarity.

Liquid Web is the hosting agency and purportedly they served papers on DSLR's ISP to take possession of the Dslr's site name and license If the servers are up it is possibly Liquid Web doing something rather than the Dslr management. Since Liquid Web owns the servers that Dslr was hosted on they also have possession of the site's software and it is unknown if their purported legal papers also includes the Dslr software and site itself. I doubt that the Dslr management at this later date could or would pay the outstanding debt owed to Liquid and the ISP to initiate and restore Dslr.

I wish we had an idea of if the site was hosted from the US or Canada and if it was the US what state?.

I would love to try and track down the legal trail. I already have checked Pacer for anything that contains DSLreports but nothing came up there.

Most states have public records, once the state and county is figured out then can search the local courts.

So have a few choices. Well tons of different possibilities.

Site is broken and they are trying to restore data back - like back in 2011-2013, forgot the exact year when they were doing data recovery on the site.
Site was hacked, and they just got control of it back and they are repairing the damage. They could have had Liquid Web shutdown the site temporarily until they got their control back.
The owners deleted the data and are putting up a totally different DSLreports.
Site was seized by liquid web by court order and liquid web or a court appointed person took control of the site.
Owners didn't pay the bills and they deleted the site to prevent anyone else from bring it back up in its current form. This also can included that the owners deleted the data before it was seized as well.
Owners are unhappy with the election results and took down the site, and putting up something different. (Someone had to actually say it).
Space Aliens have replaced the owners and they are planning on putting up a website in its place to zap our minds.
