Sometimes I think that the same can be said of all of the internet. While it can be a good source of information from legitimate sites, can be entertaining and can make life more convenient in general, nothing, not your privacy, your social life and personal connections, your money or investments, are safe like they were before. Even if you aren’t online at all, your bank’s or the website of any institution or company that you receive any goods or services from could be hacked (and it’s happening nowadays with reckless abandon), with all your personal information and money, title documents, etc., with it, not to mention that everything else that you have there, personally and monetarily, compromised. Your life and all your wealth and personal and professional accomplishments can be stolen or falsified right out from under you. The degree to which communications online are scams far and above outweighs those that are legitimate. Could you really trust anyone you’d meet online? I’m not in a position where I have to find romance or make new friends but if I was I couldn’t see doing that at all online and would just do it the old-fashioned way. Every scammer and spammer knows your email address and your phone number, so much so that especially with the telephone I can hardly recall the last time I actually got a legitimate instead of a scam or telemarketer call (when I was young of course before the internet they were virtually all legitimate and I could actually answer the telephone, something I won’t and can’t do now without knowing in advance who the caller is). The only reason I get legitimate emails is because I signed up for them or gave out my address to people I know, with the rest just unwanted and seeking only to accomplish something sinister. I’d hate to be growing up in this environment and am glad that I was able to live my life in a time when there was some sense of credibility to almost all experiences or at least that not virtually all hostile encounters were not camouflaged as legitimate.
