In many of the US states, these new voter ID laws were supposedly in response to a voter fraud problem that did not truly exist—
- it most certainly existed and there are court cases to prove it if you really want to go down that road. What’s debatable is how prevalent an issue it was and nobody can prove that one way or the other, so the sensible option seems to be to remove that concern altogether.
I was shocked when I learned it wasn’t a requirement in the United States to show a photo ID considering that practically every other country in the world requires it, even Muslim countries where veiled women have to verify ID with a female in a closed booth.
Because we’ve been doing it for as long as I remember I don’t understand why it’s such an issue for Americans.
Here in Canada we can use our driver’s license, our health card, a veteran’s card, armed forces ID card, firearms license, marriage certificate, passport, indian status card, NEXUS card, birth certificate, citizenship card, etc., etc.. Unless you’re really bad at storing personal documents there’s no reason a Canadian shouldn’t have a piece of ID to verify.
