Today is election day, go forth (if you have not done already and vote). Actually, we still allow attestation, as long as you have somebody who is able to provide ID that can vouch for you.

I just showed my DL & my voter card when I voted. Had no issues at all. And technically wouldn’t have needed the voter card, it just made the person doing the paperwork have an easier job of finding me on the list.

Our poll was at the public school down the street. We walked there. But there are few extra parking spaces available for drivers other than school staff so voters they were parking in the entrance / fire routes .
Entrance to the poll was main front entrance to the school and direct access to the front office etc.
Then the lady who was at the entrance checking ID , I handed her my driver licence and she says whew i cant read that and passed it to a guy beside her. He had a bad case of the runny nose, hopefully he isnt contagious spreading the next pandemic. One would think the requirement for the job is ability to read and in reasonable health. But hey they met the diversity check box anyway.

Joking aside (and with hopes that your not being loaded onto a plane) yes we do have voter ID laws in Canada.

The key difference is that the laws around this procedure are there to ensure the person can vote if they are eligible, where as much of the “work” in various US states has been to ensure eligible voters of a certain race, or political leaning
can’t vote or are made to go through an obstacle course to be able to vote they will choose not to bother. Also to be clear the system here isn’t flawless either, though it hasn’t become a system of gerrymandering which is too common in the USA.

In many of the US states, these new voter ID laws were supposedly in response to a voter fraud problem that did not truly exist—

Whereas the unstated purpose was NOT to increase security but rather to increase hassles for the lower classes.

I do not completely understand this. How do people NOT have ID, a driver’s licence even if they do not drive? I do not know anyone that does not have some form of government issued ID here that is good for voting.

px_eliezer_ I asked a friend of mine in Tulsa last fall whether he had to wait long to vote. His reply, "Oh no, I’m in a predominantly white neighborhood, lots of places to vote and no lines. In “colored” neighborhoods, there’s maybe one voting place and very long lines."

Donoreo Ontario offers an ID card or anyone that wants one, as far as ID its as good as a DL but of course does not grant a person the privilege to drive. A person cannot have both, either you have a driver’s licence or the Ontario ID card, given the way the province is (ie car centric) most go for a DL.

You need a mailing address to receive a card.

People who’ve had to leave their homes quickly also frequently are missing some of their documentation. Think people who lost their home to a disaster like a fire, or people who were fleeing a DV situation.

koira People still wear masks, I think it’s a good idea and I wish people that have a cold or sniffles would wear one, too often they do not. Of course this time of the year it could be allergies, there is so much yellow/green pollen residue out right now. The rain has at least pulled it out of the air but still much more to come as we transition into spring.

taraf Those are not typical sorts of events but they happen, most of the time people move and never get around to updating their ID. Some might fall into the chicken egg trap of having no documentation while trying to replace the documentation (one reason a fire safe is a good idea) and that is a PITA to get out of. If a person moved in the last 60 days perhaps I could see it but if it’s been a year it feels more like a scam or they are evading the law. But sure, people in shity relationships, precarious ones, or worse, and so on could have an issue if they want to vote. I have not bothered to deep dive the role of IPV with respect to voting but unless they go to a shelter or get some sort of support they probably do not vote, or could be made to vote in accordance to the wishes wants of the abuser. People should know what Ask for Angela means or the other signaling people might use asking for help.

Of course the homeless also don’t have addresses either typically, they are another disenfranchised lot.

It was a big issue in much of Texas.

Texas has 254 counties (!), many of them small or rural, and ¼ of the counties do not even have a motor vehicle office (and certainly nothing like Service Ontario) such that people had to travel long distances to get documents.

Lots of poor people, older people, young people, don’t have current government-issued photo ID.

Texas (as I recall) said that a Gun license was OK but that a US Veterans Administration health ID card was not.

Likewise they would not accept photo ID cards issued by colleges and universities (even in Texas) even though these are widely accepted in most US places.

Anyway Texas is (thank God) not Canada, and it’s not even like most of the rest of the USA.

My guess is that the type is too small and too little contrast for their eyes, even if they have reading glasses. Also, like many people, they probably only have drug store reading glasses they picked themselves and were not tested properly and have proper glasses.

Put simply, a situation that applies for one person doesn’t necessarily follow it applies to another person… to “walk a kilometer in another person’s shoe,” so to speak…

Why I brought two pieces of photoID with address was simply to “Be Prepared.” 🙂
