Sam’s Club plans to eliminate all checkout lanes and self-checkout in favor of Scan & Go Sam’s Club announced plans to remove all self-checkout kiosks and traditional checkout lanes nationwide,. The retail warehouse chain will rely solely on its app-based “Scan & Go” system, which allows customers to scan and pay for items as they shop.

Astyanax For awhile they set loose guard dogs in the store after hours and had to make sure everybody was out after closing so there weren’t any employee encounters with them.

Do supermarkets do this? How do they keep the dogs away from the meat? How are the dogs trained to do their job and not be distracted by the meat?

Any idea why Sam’s club has scan and go but Wal-Mart doesn’t?

My Wal-Mart has self checkouts and I love it. But I’m autistic and we always love less human interaction.

It is because people are useless. I rarely use self checkout, but one day last week I did. I had at least twice as many things as the woman next to me, she started before I got there, and I was done and gone and she still had half of her stuff to go. She was grumbling, “it must not be working right” and other things, instead of realizing that it works much better when the bar code is straight to the bar code reader instead of on all sorts of angles.

As someone that has designed BC readers 20+ yrs ago, part (just part) of the problem is people have gotten use to pointing their phone at any code and finding it is recognized.

Don’t tell her but the other day I went through the self checkout without my wife and it was a breeze.

However, I did not encounter the “please place the item in the bag” prompts. I’ve gotten to where I slam down everything in the bag, so it sees it.

This was at Wegmans I don’t go to Sam’s club.

The local CVS has auto-only-checkouts. (Well, nominally you can call for counter assistance, but by the time one shows up, you’ll regret bothering - not the fault of the assistants, management has reassigned them).

The ‘voice directions’ piss me off. They’re just so slow, they start to tell me to put my credit card in the reader (an unaccountably separate device) but by mid-sentence the reader has recognized my card and the card is back in my wallet which is back in my pocket. There needs to be a ‘fuck off, I know how this works, and if not, I can read the displayed directions’ button.

So much for automatic checkout being ‘faster’.

Vendors found nagging is unpopular here too.
A mute ( or at least lower-volume ) button helps.

I do not think you have Decathlon sports in the US (they are a European company - French). Their checkouts use some sort of 3D scanning, you put the product in a bin and it scans.

The same can be said with customers using regular manned checkout, although with a much higher number of occurrences. Claims of shoplifting are not limited to self-checkout. It’s why there are people checking receipts at the door at many stores, and have been long before self-checkout was available.

Self-checkout doesn’t cause shoplifting.

Many people today are circling back to flip-phones (or to feature phones which are kind of halfway inbetween a very basic flip phone and a true smartphone).

For example the Nokia 2780 is a flip phone which also has some Internet access for basic surfing.

However THOSE sorts of phones have their own types of operating systems such as Kai-OS, so they’re not going to run a scan&go app.

In any event, neither a basic flip phone nor a feature phone will be welcome at Sam’s….

The scan&go people have made an ugly new word.

While I don’t do “social media” apps like Facebook and Twitter (I won’t call it “X”) on my cellphone, there are many other apps that I have installed on it, so I’ll stick with my Android smart phone for now.

This is not new, has been around for years.

Sometimes called Kosher Phones, or Halal Phones, same principle.

No Internet access, sometimes also no capability for texting.

I’m sure that the Sams Club bigshots in Arkansas (HQ) are ignorant of the big purchasing power of the observant Orthodox Jewish and Muslim communities, in many places.
