1) Increase potential for theft.
2) Increase potential for being falsely ACCUSED of theft, if the customer accidentally forgets to scan something, or if the scanner does not pick it up properly.

Actually, one of the major Montreal department stores (The Bay?) or fancy malls still had one in my time, when I was a child. I found it so strange, having my mother tell a person which floor she wanted, then have the woman close a separate retractable barrier and fixed doors, before the thing moved.
