Newsgroup/Usenet like on old forum! Looking for a new provider since EarthLink is finally dropping its usenet/newgroup access on 4/1/2025. GigaNews is expensive since I rarely use its binaries, but do post and read a lot! 🙁

If just looking for usenet you can buy a 50g block on Newsgroupdirect for like $6. They don't expire it. I purchased one years ago and it is still active. Haven't used it in years but login just to make sure it stays active.

Any word on adding electronics tech to the site? Over at DSLR, there was a very vibrant community. Hams, electronics projects, the latest technology, and gadgets were discussed. I miss that forum, I got good help there.

Are we gonna bring back the regional threads? The Southeast section was a great place for talking about the hurricanes. Although that was about all it was used for. I’m not sure how busy the other reigonal sections were. I wonder if the person who made the hurricane threads came here. Maybe it was more than one person.

The Canadians got their section back. If were not gonna bring back the other reigons, we should charge Canadians a tarriff for using theirs.😛 Double on the French Canadians.😛

Edit: I see other people already made this request. And with hurricanes in mind.

Speaking of those, what was the difference between those sections at DSLR? There didn’t seem to be any difference. Was there also a section called Site Help?

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but can we possibly get an “Email” group? Multiple times over the years I’ve had an email issue I wanted to ask on DSLR but there wasn’t any place to ask these questions. And by “Email” I mean general email type questions like settings, etc. I mainly use a Client now so download all my email to my main PC. However there are so many email options out there now. Google, Yahoo, ISP provided email, etc. Paid vs Free. More Secure. Setting up ur own email server.
I realize we’ve got Hardware and Software forums but that doesn’t seem to cover things. Maybe call it “Everything Email”??

I believe we need a “Pub” or similar type forum where more controversial or, horrors, more political, discussions of national and world events can take place. From what I’ve seen of threads being started and inevitably locked and posts being moderated in the Open forum not everyone there enjoys these discussions as much as others but many really do want to have them seeing the controversial threads that are being started anyway. A separate forum would isolate such subjects from more sensitive users.

If like most here you’re a DSLR refugee like me you remember its Pub forum and I believe our regulars there conducted ourselves well enough. It did require moderation just like any other forum and not everyone on the site liked it or participated in it. If those threads aren’t your thing then you simply don’t visit that forum just like how you don’t visit a Telus forum if you’re an AT&T Fiber subscriber.

Just my $.02 to help and enrich the free flow of ideas here on the site.

I took “Feedback” as the forum where you reported something (like most of everything on DSLR was already ) broken. “Site Suggestions” I think is pretty self-explanatory but not for reporting problems with existing features. “Site Help” was I think for new users who were trying to learn how to make all the tools work that really didn’t and for how to properly post.

I do not think enough people have email problems to warrant it’s own area. The questions can be asked in the relevant groups (Microsoft, Google, etc) for which ever email platform it is.

That’s not how it worked at least on DSLR. There were two open subject forums: Open and The Pub. The Pub worked as I described in my post above with discussing more controversial subjects like world and national events. Open was for lighter less-controversial stuff but still Pub-grade discussions did bleed into the Open forum.

Different moderation isn’t always bad. it depends on the subject matter. Like all the ISP forums here should have consistent moderation considering what’s discussed. Open and The Pub on DSLR did have different moderation styles which was good as it was necessary to allow more spirited discussions and a more enriching exchange.

Another important distinction was that the Pub was a members-only forum. You could be kicked out of it for shenanigans. Several were. I can think of one well known example.
