Update on June 26, 2025: Plans have reverted to 300, 500, 1000, 2000. But, now the gateway and unlimited data are included. Bye bye 1.2TB usage cap. Most people do little uploading at home.

It was likely a congestion issue, is my guess.

These two items contradict each other.

If there were congestion problems, they can apply simple traffic management to keep it under control. If I have 300mbps upload, I don’t mind if my speed drops to 200mbps or so if my node is a bit busy. With proper traffic control it’s not a big deal.

You’d think they could have at least just rolled with the old upload speeds until D4.0.

Giving so many customers 300Mb upload means it takes only a few customers uploading large files on a node to congest it, including business customers.

Or all the people torrenting, running Plex servers, and who knows what else.

While most customers don’t do heavy uploading, all it takes is a few to cause congestion at those speeds.

I have no idea if that’s the reason, but that’s the only logical one I can think of.

Other cable companies are more conservative with their mid-split upload speeds.

Some people have/will (go directly to FDX), but there is little way to know (although, if you know exactly what all the equipment is hanging on the messanger, and in the pedestals, and in the vaults, across your entire neighborhood, you might be able to make a better guess). Since Comcast does not share the detailed plans or schedules all most can do is wait and see.

I seem to get (what appears to be) US based CSRs most of the time (although I don’t call all that often). Of course, it is also documented that some service orgs not based in the US are now using various AI tools to make the person seem to be from the customers country, so the smoke and mirrors are getting better.

The answer, of course, is it depends. At least one person participating here has stated they were always able to walk into a store and get the current promo rate for their plan(s), so five one year plans would be cheaper than the one five year plan. Your market may be different (and trying to guess what Comcast’s rates will be next week, let along years from now, is basically a crap shoot).

meerkathalon That is a damn good question. Unfortunately, I kind of fear the answer to that one.

Given what happened today I have a hard time imagining them provisioning any more 300-up accounts. Which leaves:

Roll everyone into the new plans. But this gets kind of messy with the service changes, and Comcast has historically shied away from automatically moving people off of legacy plans
Backdate a set of new legacy plans with lower upload speeds. In other words, put customers at 2000/250, but not make any service/feature changes
Do nothing, because the customer is on what’s now a legacy plan

Comcast has done all of these at one point. But if I were placing bets, I’d say it will be #2.

ViRGE in the AMA on Reddit, she said if your on a plan with 300 upload, it won’t be downgraded to 100 or 250. You won’t automatically switch plans unless you sign up for a new one.

My ISP gives me 1000/100 for $71 a month so it’s right in line with Comcast just about. The only difference is Comcast overprovisions more- approx 117m up vs my 104m up. Plus my provider has much lower latency 8-15ms vs Comcast’s 25-35ms. I’m in the northeast, both cable operators already have unlimited data. I have no equipment fees either. So it’s not as competitive in my market, but I can see where it could be competitive in others. I’ve been following this company for years. Would always ask why can you order a Big Mac at McDonald’s in every state and it tastes the same…. But everyone had different Comcast prices. This is a good thing to be uniform, even if it’s not competitive in some markets.

IMO, they’ll roll them to whatever the current upload is. There will be no more new 300 upload tiers. They won’t roll anybody into a now legacy tier.

Man-of-Leisure I wonder if cutting upload speeds is partly to help fully differentiate between mid-split and X-class? The X-Class plans are a bit more expensive and in order to justify those costs there probably need a bit more differentiation, is my guess.

Seems plausible? Xfinity Now at the bottom, midsplit for mid tier and XClass symmetrical for top tier $? Kinda makes sense longer term for positioning, even if we’re pissed about the higher prices and slower uploads for what’s available today.

I just checked, and logged in as me, the only plan offered is the 2Gb one. I currently have Fast ($89). That 2Gb offer simply shows +$26 for 5-year, and +$11 for 1 year. No way to easily downgrade online it seems, or even just go sideways. Before, they did show lower-speed plans with -$xx showing. It also now says my current Fast plan is only 500Mb. It should be 600. I’m now worried if my modem reboots or similar, it will downgrade the speed?

If there trying to differentiate between Mid-Split and X-Class, then why did they remove the X-Class branding? I’m guessing they cut the upload down on Mid-Split, because they knew they were going to start to run into performance issues, with them offering unlimited data across all tiers. If anything they’ve made it harder to differentiate, in hopes the normal customer won’t notice until after they sign up. It’s obvious they did this to compete with fiber providers. Lol there new speed tiers look really similar to what AT&T fiber offers, almost like they copy pasted some of there stuff.

My guess is that removing the 300 Mbps up tier was a “requirement” to removing the caps to prevent things like torrents from crippling their network, though technically Comcast can already throttle you if you are degrading the network but that would require active management.
