The rule, if it can be called that, goes back almost 150 years, and had its sole purpose in creating rules to exclude people who weren’t “in the know”. I am well aware of the “rule”, and don’t know anybody who really cares. The closest it ever got was the private school I went to saying no more wearing the “summer” uniform - in summer we were allowed to wear a golf shirt instead of a more formal shirt and blazer.
