You could BUY flared Levis?

We had to slit the outside seam up to the knee and insert a triangle of denim (which was one reason why you never threw away old jeans, just kept the material for spare parts).

The Levi’s we bought were boot (or “relaxed”) cut flared so if we wanted wide (or elephant) flared we would do that too, but did not insert a denim panel but usually some brightly colored patterned cloth.

Ahh! I was married and working as an engineer by then.

I remember around 1966 I was in the army, in Germany, and sent my sister some bellbottoms. It made a big hit, since they were hard to get in the US. So, I’m told.

Never wore them. My boots were always on the outside of the pants.

And riding horses out bush true “Boot jeans” were a blessing. You could pull them on or off over your riding boots.
