Thought I'd start a new thread for suggesting functionality and not clog up the "Suggestions for additional forums" thread. How about embedding YT and other videos, twitter feeds, etc. Currently I can post links but embedding is much better.

Donoreo Is there a way to get the Sort on the Following (tags) to show Tags with unread messages first?

This would be a helpful change.

Rook I think it really would. The number of times I have not seen any unread, but later I hit the more button and there they are. I think it would be really handy to see all the unread at the top (in what ever order you want) then the rest.

i noticed that you can’t scroll “notifications.”

I’m seeing that if there are more than 7 notifications, a scroll bar appears on the right of the notifications box.
Mouse scrolling works too.
This is on a desktop, I’m not sure how it works on mobile.

For tracking and organizational purposes, maybe lock this and all new suggestions be their own thread? This should help people follow up on suggestions and admins to sort, organize and respond.

MichelR I’ve noticed that this forum software handles quotes strangely at times. He likely meant to quote you for his response, then add other quoted content from somewhere else. Without indicating where it came from, it treated everything like a single block quote, rather than two separate short quotes.

I’m still baffled at the forum software choice for this place… It’s still as alien to me as it was on day one, being a user on many other forums.

It is weird, yes. Also I noticed that if you hit the checkmark (top right) when looking at the list of threads to mark the unread ones “read”, it marks all forums read, not just the current one. A couple of weeks ago I was wondering why the Apple forum was so damn quiet and that’s how I realized this is what was happening. But it’s pretty. 😃

Avernar The difference, though, is that the original quote we were discussing included a quote from somewhere else (likely a news article). If I select text from someone’s post here and use the “Quote” feature, it includes mark-up referring to the original by what looks like a (unique?) post number/identifier. That tends to work well enough.

However, using the “Insert a quote” feature, when composing, doesn’t appear to have a method of indicating that it’s a separate quote, or where it came from; it inserts a “>”, followed by the text you add, formatting it in a grey quote box. Doing this again, after a previous quote, with or without a blank in between leaves you with a merged, single block quote rather than multiple separate quotes.

One can use the usual [quote] and [/quote] tags common on other forums, which will give the desired results (if used correctly), but if there is a way to specify where the quote comes from as part of the tag, I haven’t found it yet.

Also, when using the “>” style of quoting, one needs two blank lines between them to make sure they are rendered as separate block quotes.

I don’t know of any forum software that allows you to do this.

Avernar I wasn’t really asking for anything. This whole side-discussion started when someone quoted @MichelR, and added some content from elsewhere. Without the right spacing, it merged them into a single block, causing confusion about where the quote came from. My response was an attempt to explain what happened. I’ll quote you for a demonstration:

This comes from using the “Insert a quote” feature (quotation mark icon) when composing a reply, like so:

So, even with a blank line, the other content looks like I’m attributing it to you, even though that may not be what I intended or expected. To fix it, I can do this (two consecutive blank lines):

Which gives me:

Avernar Huh? I’m confused. Now I really don’t know what you’re asking for.

Which is a little closer to what one would expect, but not an entirely obvious way to get it.

One can also achieve the same thing, more predictably, by doing it this way:

The only thing that isn’t obvious, so far, is if there is a way to attribute a quote as part of the tag (as we were able to do on the old forum). I may not have it exactly right, but one used to be able to do something like:

[bquote [user=somebody] said:] The quote.[/bquote]

With other options to refer to their post. We mostly have this, but one could also use:
[bquote <a href="https://magazine.example/interesting-article.html">Link text</a>]Quoted article section[/bquote]

This would add a link to the quoted article, at the beginning of the block, as part of the quote. I haven’t found a substitute here yet.

It’s built-into phpBB. A quoted post has a tiny up-arrow to the right of the username. Clicking on that link goes to the post where the quote came from.
