Even then, the USA cannot produce everything.
We don’t grow much coffee for example.
And there are some sectors in which it makes better overall sense to buy from abroad—clothing for example.
What is MISSING from all this is the SERVICE side.
Right now, when I want to talk to someone at health insurance company, or a credit card company, I have to talk to someone in India.
This has MANY problems of poor language fluency, poor phone connections, and lack of understanding of basic facts.
There should be a goal of bringing SERVICE/SUPPORT jobs back to the USA/Canada—but tariffs do NOTHING to help this.
RIGHT NOW, GIANT OFFICE PARKS are being built in INDIA by AMERICAN companies:

But tariffs reduce trade by making goods more expensive; they don’t affect services or offshoring, the practice of hiring workers overseas. Visa restrictions are equally irrelevant. The roles at these new centers are not for immigrants. They’re for people who want to stay in India and work for American companies.

Again, this is a big issue, but tariffs have nothing to do with fixing it.
US banks, US credit card companies, US insurance companies, US companies of all sorts, should be required to employ US workers…if they want to have US customers.
