Meh. Markets go up markets go down. Over the long run markets go up and have been one of the best ways to grow wealth. Drops are short compared to run-ups, and the long term average is always up.

… and yet nobody argued with the Democrats when they proposed it, and nobody argued with Trump when he proposed it over the past 30 years against anyone who didn’t give America a fair deal, and nobody really argued against it when Trump said he was thinking about hitting Canada and the EU with tariffs for not pulling their own weight on the global security scene a decade ago.

So, yea, I guess it might seem “batshit crazy” if you weren’t paying attention to what people have been saying for the past 30 years but again, none of this came out of left field.

Perhaps it’s our history of living under politicians who say they’re going to do something strong, harsh, or decisive during their term but fail to deliver but again, the breadcrumbs are there and I can link you to them if you missed them. The only difference between today and 10 years ago is that the Democrats have suddenly changed their mind about tariffs against China and Mexico for some bizarre reason…

If the POTUS cracked once he can crack again. As evident now that he says he “doesn’t rule out” extending the 90-day tariff pause. He’s now established a market pain threshold before he reverses course whether it’s in stocks or treasuries.

Tariffs have been proposed in the past. I think everyone gets that. But tariffs like these? You’d probably have to go back to Smoot-Hawley (which has been referred to as “a disaster” for the U.S).

1990s, with the Democrats - they literally said they wanted to apply tariffs to any country where there was a trade deficit or a trade inadequacy and Trump, again, many times in the past 30 years. I’m sure I heard a clip of him saying “everyone” or “anyone” when he was President the first time around but then the pandemic hit which changed everything.

No it isn’t, it simply highlights what hypocrites the usual suspects are and also highlights how some people hate something just because of the people involved rather than the idea itself. Something someone had an open mind with 30 or 15 years ago, suddenly it’s “insane” or whatever adjectives we want to throw around, it becomes an idea that receives an emotional response rather than an intellectual response.

Yes, again, the Democrats have if you want to be honest and truthful on the topic. Go listen to what Bernie Sanders was saying no so long ago, he wanted to slap all manner of tariffs on everyone that was stealing American jobs when the economy tanked in the upper 2000s. Chuck Schumer wanted the same tariffs Donald Trump wanted at the start of all this back in the 90s! Nancy Pelosi wanted 30% tariffs on China and tariffs on Mexico in the video linked above.

My point was I feel the same people reacting with vitriol and emojis against Trump today would be thoughtful and considerate of the idea when it was proposed by the other side… or are we all aligned against Bernie Sanders now that Trump wants to do the same as him?

No he doesn’t, that’s not how the government works. First off, he was democratically elected to do what he’s doing now and secondly, most of his actions have to pass through either the judiciary, the Senate, or the House; His power is very much fettered.

Probably after witnessing the rebound in the stock market but at the same time, this could have all been avoided in the first place if everyone wasn’t playing games. I wrote this elsewhere but the only reason we’re in this mess is because politicians are playing games for political clout more than they’re acting in the best interests of their citizens. That isn’t a slight at any party in any country, I’m referring to a long list of politicians on either side of the political spectrum in a lot of countries.

There is one key detail that many are missing, however: just because someone thinks something is a good idea does not necessarily mean that they should do that thing, nor that it is actually a good idea. Human history is full of examples of this. It’s also far worse when you’re somebody in his position, whose decisions have such an impact on so many people.

Furthermore, they haven’t been at all consistent in their justifications for any of these actions, and have resorted to misusing war-time and emergency measures to impose them, in spite of the fact that such measures are supposed to be initiated by Congress, not unilaterally by the President. The fact that Republicans in the House have failed to assert their authority is a disastrous failure on their part, and sends the wrong message. Even if they spinelessly agreed with the policies, they should have insisted on being involved in their implementation and adoption.

Really? Since early November, have you seen anyone oppose him in any significant way, other than Senator McConnell (now that he’s not running again and has nothing to lose) and a few others? Even a doctor caved, and allowed Kennedy into HHS, despite his legitimate objections, etc. There are many articles about this; the government is not working, and is dysfunctional, at best.

As an aside, McConnell had the perfect opportunity to show he had a spine, when he was Republican leader in the Senate, during the impeachment hearings. All of this could have been avoided, and the reputation of the United States and their economy wouldn’t be in tatters if only he had done the right thing. He does not deserve forgiveness for what he has allowed to happen.
