hitherelolz Interesting that they are going into Butler. Taking on Armstrong on their home turf. Given Armstrong’s pricing, I wonder how many residents will stay loyal to the hometown operator, or switch. My guess is that price prevails for most.
Lumos/T-Mobile Fiber just made an announcement that they’re going to be expanding further into Northeast Ohio. I’d rather see these guys finish what they’ve already claimed is “coming soon” before making more hollow announcements that may or may not turn out to be vaporware, like Omni pulling Mineral Ridge and Aurora off their list. Lumos has had a laundry list of cities out there for a full year now, and I think they partially lit up 3 before T-Mobile took over. T-Mobile merged that list with their other fiber acquisition and now have 13 cities/counties in Ohio listed. Maybe with the funding that comes with being owned by one of the big guys, they’ll be able to ramp up expansion for real now. They claim that construction in these new areas begins later this year.
I’m still waiting on any evidence that altafiber is beginning their build in this region. It has been just about a full year since their announcement, and nothing has changed on the website since about October.
In the meantime, Windstream has stepped up their game just recently. I’ve seen whole neighborhoods, many with underground utilities, having 811 tickets filed for digging, specifically for fiber installation. 2-3 every week so far in August just in the areas I monitor regularly. Seems like it coincided with the Uniti merger closing. I suspect they may have had these projects lined up on the back burner for a while, ready to go, and just needed the merger to complete so that funding was there.
Sometimes I just feel like Omni is a little too much of a fly-by-night operation to trust when they say fiber is coming. When AT&T, Armstrong, T-Mobile/Lumos, and even Metronet say it; I believe it.
