I seem to have dodged major tree damage with only a few limbs here and there, others in my area are not so lucky but nothing major that I am aware of except for power outages and the Hodag Dome collapsing in Rhinelander, Wi. Now we have this coming on Tuesday night. Tomorrow Night 04/01 87% / 3 in Watching a potential winter storm. Periods of snow. Low 28F. Winds ESE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 90%. Snow accumulating 3 to 5 inches. Blah yuck again.

My local forecast changed to have a total of 6.5″snow (north of Philadelphia PA, just west of Trenton NJ). However… that’s going to change over to ice later this afternoon. The icing is now predicted to be up to 0.5″ - that’s in the dangerous category.

Somewhat similar here in Lincroft, NJ - My Accuweather currently shows a snow total of 6 inches with 0.68 inch of ice! Hopefully that will be mostly sleet and not freezing rain!

Hard to say when looking out here, with the wind drifting the snow a bit, but I’d say we have between 2 to 3 inches of snow so far at 12:30 PM. Latest forecasts show a total of only 5 or 6 inches now before turning to sleet/freezing rain.

telcodad At this point, it’s just easier to say that I’m in Morrisville PA - north of Philadelphia PA and across the river from Trenton NJ. I’d say I got about 7″ or so snow (rough guess) before it all changed over. It was graupel. Now I’d say that sleet is taking over with a few hints of rain.

My main concern is when the freezing rain fully takes over later this evening. The temperature is currently 16 deg F and expected to be around 21 deg F tonight.

OK, at 3:30 PM it looks like we may have about 7 to 8 inches of snow here. The snow appears to have lightened up and no sleet yet.

Looks like we picked another 2 inches of snow for a total of around 10 to 11 inches now.

Good luck with it all folks. We are getting sustained day after day of temperatures well into the late 30’s to early 40’s C. Proper heat wave temps across most of the Southern continent and looking to continue on for weeks.

Huge bush fires across many states, some of which have been burning for weeks, too big, to wide and too hot to put out.

Are people who lost power because of ice bringing powerlines down gonna be without power for days and weeks? Or is it a quicker fix than when a hurricane knocks out power?

Heat84 It will be days and weeks in some places but quicker in others. It all depends on the area the ice hit in. If it hit in a heavy tree population area it is going to take longer to get power restored than if no trees are around. I suppose yes you could liken it to Hurricane damaged areas in the power distribution sense. Add onto that sub freezing and sub zero temps in some of the hardest hit areas makes this a very dangerous situation for those affected. There have been deaths already and realistically more to come attributed to this system.

EST WEDNESDAY…

WHAT…Very cold wind chills as between 5 and 10 degrees below
zero expected.
WHERE…Portions of central, northern, and northwest New Jersey
and east central and southeast Pennsylvania.
WHEN…From 7 PM this evening to 10 AM EST Wednesday.
IMPACTS…The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could
result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Extensions to the Cold Weather Advisory are
expected and could be upgraded to an Extreme Cold Warning for
Wednesday night and/or Thursday Night. Wind chills below zero and
even 10 below zero at night are likely to continue into the
weekend.
