Hi, I'm picking up where we left off at DSL Reports. This thread is for anything Service Electric related. I even added the other division so this thread will cover all the Service Electric divisions. SECV is Hazleton, Sunbury, and Birdsboro and SECTV is Allentown, Wilkes Barre, and Phillipsburg NJ. Hopefully everybody from the old site will find their way here.

I got my fiber installed today! 1gig package. What do you want to know?

Most recent 3 speedtests were on fiber.

Wired ping to SECV speedtest server is 1ms. Cloudflare ping to 1.1.1.1 is 4ms. Most sites are under 10ms in the 3 to 9ms range. Outstanding. Was able to turn off all QOS in unifi. Nokia XS-010X-Q linked up to UCG-Fiber router at 10gbps.

cypherstream Did they completely remove the coax line running from the outside demarc into your home (and within your home going to the modem) and replace with a fiber cable?

Theres no data to be retrieved from the NOKIA ONT. No more signal levels to worry about. They said something about my light level on iGlass reading -17.5 db and he said that was very good, well into the green.

I also had to change my gateway ping target in smokeping. The CMTS gateway (first hop after my router) 10.71.0.1 is no longer pingable. So I changed it to my new first hop as seen in those traces. All 1ms and under. 934.4us avg so far. I’ll keep an eye on it. My reverse DNS now contains the XX.XX.XX.XX.res-olt.brd.ptd.net notation.

Yeah, I remember everything being smoother when I had Fiber too at my old house. It was like everything was on fast forward and I was the one struggling to keep up. I forget what was written in the cover of my Fiber box, but my light signal was well within the green too. I had AT&T Fiber’s 2 Gig package and it played out to 2500/2500. Ping was 1-5 for everything I tried. So much better than Comcast, which was hitting 200 and being unusable at points.

I miss it so much and I hope everything you do with it just zooms and you don’t have to worry about it ever again. The way the internet should be. And having a ONT is also great too. Having to deal with a gateway and IP Passthrough to use your own router sucks. One of the things I hated about AT&T Fiber, but I’m not in a position to use the 8311 Discord bypass, so I just had to deal with it.

luckydriver Someone in Reifton got that message too. I did not. Maybe CMTS firmware upgrades? I’m no longer on a CMTS (my modem is now just put away). They cut the coax lines flush with the ground and remove the modem MAC address from the account.

The biggest thing on fiber is the latency improvement, asides from the symmetrical upload.

Here’s a 12 hour graph from Speedtest Tracker which does an hourly speedtest. You can clearly see where I switched from coax to fiber.

Oddly, I don’t have IPv6 currently. I may have to mess with my unifi router.

pb5053 They cut the coax cable all the way to the ground. They pulled the whole grey “Cable Guard” box off along with the cable going into the house and ground wire. Using the same hole, they pushed the fiber cable through, circled slack in the box from the home side into a green APC coupler and circled slack from the street side into the other side of the coupler. There is only one connector between the Nokia ONT and the tap, and thats the coupler in the new smaller outside grey box. The only marking on the box is “Mfg. by CORNING” in the lower left corner. The only coax lines in the house by my electric panel are now just disconnected. They took the main feed and the splitter.

They filled the wall with silicone since the fiber cable is MUCH thinner than a coax cable.

Here’s another speedtest from my Macbook M5 on wifi in my living room. Look at that ping… 3ms on wifi, wow.

took till 643 am for the internet to come back on. so is there any idea when fiber will be in my area ..behind exeter diner. i’m in the overhead wire section but the underground area did have work done earlier this year. im reasonably certain no overhead work was done in my backyard where the lines are run between properties. (other than 2 years ago by comcast) so i guess that would have to be done first. then run wire to the house and into my crawlspace.

i just hope the fiber is as reliable if they are gonna remove the other cable.

luckydriver I didn’t notice any outage. The Unifi app shows solid green all night, and my smokeping graphs look good. It must have been some update to the CMTS or something related to the cable side of things. How long were you out? It came back at 6:43 AM for you but what was the duration? I’m seeing what looks to maybe be an outage near 2:17 to 2:37 AM at one of our ptd buisness accounts through its CM8200A modem. But I see another log before its vpn tunnel log about latency alarms starting at 1:25 AM as well as loss = 100%. And yes the CM8200A shows 16.2db for upstream channel 5 (44.3 through 44.8 for the other 4).

Up time as of this post is 8 hours 27 minutes 46 sec. 8 hours ago is in the 2 am vicinity.
Modem firmware AB01.04.013_102221_212.0A.NSH

The modem logs looks like it got its time set at 01:17:00, not sure if the time is correct. Prior to that was a spam of sync timing errors, failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing with a date in of 12/31/1969. The last valid timestamp was shown as 6/1/2026 23:29:43.00, sync timing synchronization failure. That sure looks to me like a CMTS software update and reboot.

Strange because we usually get emails from notifications@smart.penteledata.net about maintenance events due to being a business account. The last one I got was about business voice maintenance on 6/13, and it just affects creating hunt groups and other maintenance tasks in the online portal.

For your area, I don’t think any fiber is run yet. They did 562 through St Lawrence, and then backing up through Reifton. Williams Tech was doing some splicing near Boscov’s recently. Once they get all that backfilled, they will likely keep going east bound on the south side of 422 from the Giant shopping area back down all the way to the intersection where you turn to go to downtown Birdsboro.

Still no IPv6, and my UCG-Fiber did reboot to update to UniFI OS 5.1.15 and Network 10.4.57 the other night, so I guess they just don’t have it turned up yet on the Nokia OLT switch.

Other than that, great service so far. Really low pings. I swapped two AP’s around - swapped the Unifi U7 Pro XGS and the U6-Pro. The Wifi 7 ap is now on the celing in my living room and the U6-Pro is now mounted on the wall in my utility room. I still have an old AC-Lite out in the garage.

I really should get them ALL upgraded to U7 Pro, at least the XG. What I find is, particularly for the iPhone at least, it tends to really hang onto that 6 GHz band on the U7 Pro, even if I’d have better signal quality jumping to a 5 GHz channel on a closer AP. I can disable 6E in the iPhone’s wifi settings and it follows the correct roaming (set it to -75 db) but I’d really like to have 6 Ghz everywhere. The U7 Pro XG is $199 though plus now some stupid memory surcharge. Oh well first world problems. I can still hit 400mbps from the bedroom, and I guess why would I need more than that on a phone. The real speed matters for my server, hardwired clients and maybe the living room.

what windows app do you recommend to track (graph etc) an in progress upload to the cloud? i’m uploading a 600 gig file and over night when i woke up i see it slowed down a lot to 1 to 3 mb/s but when i reboot the modem i always instantly get 6 to 7. but other than checking the cloud app every once in a while id love to see the historical graph for the past X hours

I’m not sure of a windows app, maybe GlassWire? Also theres Networx.

With the unifi ecosystem, I use unpoller and grafana. I could also setup a cacti SNMP monitoring too for each port, but none of that is easy like running a simple setup and clicking next,next,next.

Even though the vast majority of subs won’t get home phone service, I’m kinda surprised this ONT doesn’t have an RJ11 jack, since it’s marketed to "designed to deliver triple play
services in a fiber to the home (FTTH) environment to single family units".
The DZS ZNID-GPON-2424A1 ONT that i3 Broadband uses here have 2 RJ11 jacks, for up to two lines of service.
My friends up in Chicago that have Astound FTTH got a Calix GP1101X, that has an RJ11.

dishrich I’ll have to ask if they offer a different ONT if someone gets phone service.

I get it via a Grandstream HT-802 configured for use with voip.ms.

Nokia makes some with RJ-11 ports. Maybe they just don’t spend money on it if the customer doesn’t need it. Also the press release stated SECV was using a 25GPON system. I guess it’s XGS-PON now with the ability to migrate as needed.
