Hopefully, we can get a discussion started here. ElQuintron Yep. I actually thought about 'snapshot' for a while. 'Instantané' (like a Polaroid...or instant coffee :-| ) was the best word I could come up with without going franglais and just saying 'snapshot'. Lets be real its Politics BEHAVE is not even a point or thing to consider or to account for its an non-entity in political topics and discussions.

I would say to be safe to avoid politics since that will just divide people and create scenarios where mods will have to start banning people.

You already know from me but for me the Blue Room was the best part of DSLR and I miss it the most and would not want to lose it. It was a place where you could express your views without worry. The sooner your replacement could be set up the better as far as I'm concerned. I really appreciate your effort and willingness to do that. Let us know!

I am not excluding the political aspect but founding and forming a new site needs time to mature and as little contention and social divisions or polarization as possible right now. Political things, topics and forums for politics are best handled and contended with on already mature well established sites and not best for ones just forming.

TikTok is back thanks to Trump. Is this a good or bad thing in your view? Since I'm was 15 y.o. the year Nixon was first elected it really doesn't matter to me. It might have at the time.

TikTok said Sunday afternoon it was in the process of restoring service to its US users after going dark overnight when a new law banning the app took effect at midnight.

In a post on X Sunday afternoon, TikTok said, "In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive."

In a social media post on Sunday, Trump asked tech companies to "not let TikTok stay dark" and reiterated his plan to issue a reprieve once he takes office.

"I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security,” Trump posted. “The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order."

TikTok's statement followed roughly two hours later.

HFB1217 It was just a news item, so a "current event." Again, since it's something I've never used I express no opinion about it even from a national security perspective but I suppose that it's something for the high school crowd as well as those who run a business on it to be happy about.

Edit: Whoops! I thought you were responding to my TikTok post but see it was to my comment on the creation of a Blue Room by @DrStrange. I agree that that solution by invitation only will be the best thing and that it should be kept away from here, certainly for the time being.

With respect to TikTok (keeping the politics out of it):

If I'm joking, I say 'Good, ban that thing. It's annoying'.

If I'm being serious, I don't like the idea of the US (or any other) government banning an app. Governments banning things smacks of authoritarianism. I'm diametrically opposed to authoritarianism.

That said, I'm a security hawk, so the Chinese thing concerns me more than a little.

I guess we'll see what happens, but ByteDance needs to go away for security reasons. Hopefully, a compromise which is acceptable to both sides can be achieved.

Same for me, ideologically it poses no issues (other usual social media annoyances, which is why I'm not on it) but... it's a huge info funnel right into the Chinese government.

My GF used to be on it all the time (she's well past the age of majority too) and from what I saw it just seemed to be a bunch of people dancing around. Now she's graduated to YouTube. What a bunch of people dancing around has to do with national security I don't know but Congress and Biden in their infinite wisdom might know something I don't.
