New tiers and pricing?

I see on another forum that Mediacom is going to announce some changes to the internet tiers and the costs. I hope they don't eliminate the tier I'm on now and automatically bump me up to a higher speed at higher cost. They have done that to me several times over the past 20+ years. If I call them about it the only choices are to go with the new tier and price or drop down to a much slower speed. I never get to stay with what I already have.

gregherrin325 Did you ever get notified by Mediacom directly about changing plans? The forums say the 500 is being discontinued but they have never told me so. I get a bill every month for 500 and I look it over carefully each time to see if anything says about changes and there is nothing.

B_W no they didn’t send me an email but when I was on the phone with them earlier she said it was discontinued.

I am in Cedar Rapids, IA. We are also currently on the 500 tier, paying $85/mo with a promotion that goes through next January, even though the 500 tier is being eliminated. When I click on the link, within my account, that shows me the current tiers, 500 is not there. It only lists 300, 1000, and 2000, all with unlimited data. We have not received any notifications that the tiers and prices are changing. For us, the 300 would be fine, and it only costs $65/mo. I guess I have to assume Mediacom will just keep us on the 500 tier unless I call and ask to drop to 300.

hawkeye_wx The ratecard page shows 500 will become 300 Mbps/100Mbps/1500 GB for $99.99 after the city is upgraded to 10G, which I think they’ve rebranded as “Multi-Gig and Symmetrical” in recent press releases.

bikeaddict I’ve seen that general rate card page, but it was last updated back in December. The rate page within my account says the 300 tier is 300/100/unlimited for $65. I’ll just have to keep an eye on it and also contact Mediacom before the next billing cycle begins (June 20th).

I just got my Internet 500 bill in the mail today. Yes, I still get a paper bill. I thought it was kind of odd to offer special deals to those on a speed tier that is supposed to be discontinued. Plus no offer to change to a different speed tier. I’m staying with 500 until told I have to change.

B_W Just saw this page that lists grandfathered service plans. It’s not particularly useful since they can kick you off the plan whenever they want.

“Customers who subscribed to a grandfathered Internet Service plan prior to the date they were discontinued will continue to receive the Service with the download and upload speeds and usage allowances listed below until the customer chooses to change service, or until Mediacom elects to no longer support it (in which case Mediacom will provide prior written notice).”

bikeaddict Thanks. I never saw that before that I remember. I’ve been with Mediacom 23 years and during that time I have been bumped up in speed at a higher cost quite a few times and without asking or a notice either. That’s how I have the 500 plan now.

B_W They’ve always sent me an email when I’m being involuntarily upgraded to a faster plan. Example excerpts below.

“Beginning on December 22, 2020, your Internet 200 service will become Internet 300. The speeds associated with your account will increase from your current download speed up to 200 Mbps and upload speed up to 20 Mbps to your new download speed up to 300 Mbps and upload speed up to 30 Mbps at no additional charge.”

“Beginning today, November 15, 2022, your Internet 400 service will become Internet 600. The speeds associated with your account will increase from your current download speed up to 400 Mbps to your new download speed up to 600 Mbps. Your monthly data usage allowance will increase from 2,000 GB to 3,000 GB.”

“Effective immediately, your Internet 600 service is now 1 GIG Internet at no cost to you! The speeds associated with your account have increased from your current download speed of 600 Mbps to your new download speed up to 1,000 Gbps and your current upload speed increased from 30 Mbps to up to 50 Mbps! ”

bikeaddict They are probably sending messages like that to me too but to my old mchsi.com email address I had with them. I quit using that years ago.

I went to the Mediacom office to change from 500 to 300. I was told my old Docsis 3.0 modem will no longer work at some point this year as the city is upgraded. I guess I have to go buy a 3.1.

hawkeye_wx DOCSIS 3.0 modems may still work, but will likely have slower speed. I was using an old Motorola until 2019 that I didn’t realize was slowing down my connection (probably 200 Mbps) until I upgraded it.

Mediacom currently only recommends the Netgear CM2500 and CM3000 that are capable of mid/high-split. You could probably get away with a used CM2000 off eBay for around $100. Or there are still like new refurb CM3000 modems on Amazon for $191. I also have my old CM1000 in the closet you can have for free if you’re near Cedar Rapids.

Docsis 3.0 should work fine with 300

I have a Netgear CM1100 Docsis 3.1 that works with 1 gig

gregherrin325 Modems with only 1 Gbps ethernet are limited to speedtest of around 940 Mbps. Newer modems with 2.5 GbE can hit 1140 Mbps, as long as your router and PC have 2.5 GbE or faster.

I actually don’t need this speed most of the time, but I don’t like being limited by my hardware and not getting the full speed I’m paying for.

bikeaddict Ok but the person with the post said he needs a modem for 300mb. A Docsis 3.0 should suffice. That was my point.

For sure, my Docsis 3.0 modem is fine for lower speeds. I get about 400 Mb when running speed tests. However, I think the local Mediacom customer service person said that, once my city’s network is upgraded this year, Docsis 3.0 modems will no longer work regardless of which tier you are on, even if it’s only 300 Mb.

hawkeye_wx Mediacom sent out an email way back in April 2024 (Cedar Rapids) warning that my DOCSIS 3.0 modem should be upgraded, but I already had a 3.1 modem since Nov 2019. The upgrade is still being rolled out in the CR area. There was a Broadband Installations (I think) construction crew doing horizontal drilling in my yard with a Ditch Witch a few weeks ago, though not sure if it was Mediacom contractor.

bikeaddict Thanks for the link to the map. On our account page the map is blank, so this is the first good map I’ve seen. I live on the west side of Cedar Rapids, and my house is actually stuck in one of the few bare spots that is not even in the “coming soon” orange color.
