Astyanax You can use a proven no logs VPN like Mullvad or Proton’s Secure Core servers (or double hop both with a virtual machine) before making your Tor connection to add further obfuscation. Truthfully though, if the feds want to get you, and you’re using your home internet connection, they’re going to get you. The US government has the capability to trace essentially any internet connection in the world. Time stamp correlation is all the proof they need to make a case and then you’re fighting to prove it wasn’t actually you.
For most people who just want some privacy though, Tor is a good free option.
For fun I fired up Proton on my Mac, connected to a Finland server, then opened my Debian 13 Parallels VM, connected to Proton’s Secure Core (Switzerland + NY double hop), then connected to Tor. Won’t win any speed records but it does work.
It doesn’t leak traffic either.
Left is the double hop VPN (I don’t know why it says Texas, it should be NY, sometimes this site doesn’t get the location right but either way it’s connected to a US Proton server that’s routed back through a Switzerland Proton server that’s then connected to my real IP), right is the Tor connection.
