According to the last pope prophecy, he's supposed to be the last pope before the end of the world. Some people think the prophecy is bunk.

I'm confused. He's in critical condition but he's alert. I don't think I've heard of that before. My idea of someone in critical condition is they're unconscious and hooked up to machines.

Heat84 It IS bunk. That “prophecy” is based on postmillennial dispensationalism, which has a strong anti-Roman Catholic streak. Prophecy, in the Christian tradition, is not future-telling but forth telling; speaking of God in the current situation and time. There are recent examples, but I don’t want to be accused of being political.

Pope Francis is just as human as you or me. He is human and will die one day. A new pope will be elected. And the beat goes on.

A person need not be unconscious to be critically, or even gravely ill.

He's got pneumonia with polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, and recently, signs of an early stage kidney failure -- couple these with his age (88) and the fact that he lost part of his right lung decades ago to another infection -- most people at this point would be advised to get their last rite while they can.

Obviously, he's probably getting the best health care money and prayers can buy, but unfortunately, I think there's still a better than 33% chance that he'll be called to heaven within 2 weeks,.

Why do end of the world prophecies usually come from Christianity? Why do you never hear about any Jewish or Muslim or Hindu end of the word prophecies? Is Christianity just better at marketing itself than othet religions?

Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the Hindu faith all have end-of-world prophecies. Perhaps you don't hear of them because of the cultural background you happen to live within...

I hope the Pope can bounce back, he is a kind soul and his liberalization of the old church is good for the world. I sure hope the next guy isn't a jerk and keeps things moving forward.

Mind you, I can't stand organized religion. I still have faith in higher entities though. I kinda see the universe as a being, something we cannot fathom.

You guys forget Buddhism, Taoism, B'Hai, Pagan, and Native Beliefs. Many are profetic and of these faiths some great truths and some horrible lies are written across their traditions.

px_eliezer_ Yes, I wrote that in a hurry. John Nelson Darby was a literalist who published a "translation" of scripture between 1865 and 1890. He was also a dispensationalist, which shades his interpretation and translation. He was affiliated with the Plymouth Brethren.

As most certainly do I. Nevertheless, he was an intelligent man, and thus someone to be aware of - even on a 'know your enemy' level. I recall that his PBS TV show was worth tuning in for.

But really, 'immanentize the eschaton' entered my consciousness from the Illuminatus trilogy. It was only later that I found that they were using the phrase from Buckley.

dave Yes, I used to watch him on PBS, as well. Now I recognize why I didn't like Buckley much. His beliefs, conceptualized by that phrase, are counter to by own personal beliefs about social justice.
