I don’t think it’s possible to get rid of the ads with any free version–it’s almost certainly embedded in the source code for the app that cannot be altered once complied. What was the “fancy” version that you paid for? Was it only for Windows 7 or older Windows versions of that era? If you paid for a license, possibly it could be transferred to a current paid version that you like and that because it is a paid one won’t have the ads.
Personally, they never bothered me–just a couple of clicks to close them and the “price” you pay for free stuff. They don’t even come up for me at every close either, but maybe just 20% of the time.
