Question about updating from old iPad to new one

There is no emergency to do this, just getting information on the “How-To”😉

Have an old IPAD that’s not backed up to our family iCloud. It is at 16.7.16.
Used primarily as a DVR, taken on vacations for TV & movie playback. Stand alone or via WIFI, to systems at home - Works fine!

When Wife got new IPhone, we were given a new iPad and we splurged on more memory.
It sits in box, tested to verify it works but not configured in the least. Figure we’ll charge it couple times a year, it’s a spare for when needed. The old iPad: It’s got email & web surfing, but primarily only used as a DVR connected to our cable and other streaming APPS.

My Questions:

When we do want to set it up, since old hardware & iOS can’t ever be current, like new iPad will - and isn’t backed up to cloud (think family plan might have space if needed, but what about the difference in iOS??)…. Can the old iPad’s suff be updated to new as yet not configured iPad?

Or. Just make notes of what apps are on old iPad and manually load & config same on new, after new one is set up??

Asking now for later— plan is to run old iPad for now. New iPad still in box!

Full disclosure: I asked Gemini to re-write what I wrote because I did not want to sound forceful and shoot down your suggestions - so here is what I wanted to say and I let Ai assist me with the composition of the answer.

16.7.16 means the iPad is in the vicinity of 10 years old. I would activate the new one and not just leave it alone and charge it a couple of times a year.

You can put the 2 devices side by side and as you see an app you want on the new, go to the app store and begin the download. You do not have to wait for a single app to fully download before you start the rest of them, the can and will download simultaneously and quickly. The versions on the 10 year old ipad will be different with up-to date versions but not all.

The other thing to keep in mind is your data safety. Because the old iPad is about 10 years old, Apple stopped updating its security software a long time ago. If you’re doing any online shopping, banking, or even just checking email on it, it’s a lot easier for hackers to get in. Plus, if that old iPad suddenly quits working one day, moving your photos and passwords over will be a massive headache compared to doing it now while both are working.
since you paid extra to get that extra storage space, you should totally enjoy it! You can download all the movies, photos, and apps you want without ever seeing those annoying ‘storage full’ warnings. You bought a really nice machine—you deserve to enjoy how fast and smooth it is today
Also: Just a heads-up on the new one though—iPad batteries are actually designed to be used regularly. If a new battery sits in a drawer and only gets charged a couple of times a year, it can fall into a ‘deep discharge’ state. When that happens, the battery can permanently die or refuse to hold a charge at all. I’d hate for you to open it in a year or two and find out the battery is ruined before you even got to use it."

JanJ DVR? Like record and play back? If so, then what do you use?

DTV CONNECT. Various streaming stuff.
If we don’t like what’s on tv at hotel/motel, we use this. She also saves movie/show downloads on it, too, so if motel WIFI Sucks, we still have stuff to watch, too! The old iPad works good enough for that, and DS APPS for our NAS’s access too.
Our way of thinking is: since we have our phones that are current and have VPN, too.
Just use old iPad as a portable DVR!!

Live in mountains - in between mountains & your end up loving Satelite! Even with dual deep fringe antenna @ high gain preamp.
Satellite, with internet as backup, and OTA Antenna as fallback!
We are in area where Helene hit in western North Carolina, we watched a couple Stations go off air when their mountaintop transmitters ran out of gas! Internet was out for a month. Satellite was only thing that continued!
