Truckloads of Tesla Batteries Keep Getting Stolen Before They Even Leave the Factory

Trailers containing millions of dollars worth of Tesla car and home batteries have allegedly been stolen straight from loading docks at the company’s Nevada facilities at least 11 times since last December, according to sheriff’s records obtained by WIRED.

“It’s an epidemic right now,” says Storey County Sheriff’s Detective Sam Hatley, who has been investigating the Tesla cases.

May not all be Tesla’s fault, but I guess by default, every trailer should have a hidden GPS transmitter.

Fault? Not so much - but responsibility after one or two however? You would think their entire processes, systems, and facility would have been redone to prevent this. Tracking equipment in the shipments, additional dock and facility security, including additional gates and checkpoints with inspections of loads and bill-of-lading, etc. – If the US Mint can deliver cash safely to banks all over the US without having truckloads go missing, Tesla could do the same with batteries. If they aren’t then its one of two things - their insurance is too good and hasn’t cracked down on them yet, or its all inside jobs and management are involved and don’t want it to stop.

One would think that after losing a couple of trailers they would take steps to prevent that. But with 11 confirmed heists that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Hydraglass offered an excellent answer so I don’t need to go over that again, but there’s that famous saying: “Fool me once, shame on – shame on you. Fool me twice – you can’t get fooled again.” 😉

If your house kept getting broken into every weekend and all of your items got stolen every single time, how many times do you think your insurance would cover you before they declared that you were actively facilitating the theft and responsible for your own losses?

In some NJ towns there are lots of car thefts especially luxury cars.

The local cops keep nagging—Lock your car doors!! Stop leaving the damn keys in the car!!

But it keeps happening—and if someone has their car stolen because they were negligent in one of those ways (or similar) then I’d say that they ARE partly at fault.

Tesla ALSO has a responsibility to their shareholders to prevent losses from negligence (they ARE a public company now) so that’s clearly fault.

Even if the response is “well insurance will cover it” this will surely cause their premiums to go up, so that’s still a loss to the company (hence the shareholders).

And as Tesla is a robotics company of sorts, they should try to follow a version of Asimov’s first and third laws:

A company must not cause harm through inaction.

A company must protect itself (unless that conflicts with a superior obligation).

Hydraglass I would be interested in hearing about any such case where such an accusation is made. Imagine being accused of causing the theft of your own property merely because you have it. Would you get cancelled? Certainly due to the risk but not because you cause it. Sad that there is a thought process like this.

Since my auto insurance rates or car prices aren’t affected by Tesla’s losses, no. Let them deal with their own problems. It’s my understanding that the company’s parent organiztion has the most brilliant security people on earth, so they can sort out with their own LP people.

Meanwhile in some jurisdictions they say to leave your keys easily accessible for the car thief (albeit, they wisely backtracked).

Yes, in case of REPEATED theft because someone horribly failed at securing their property, the victim CAN be blamed.

For example, do you think your insurance company would be happy with you if your car was stolen multiple times from your driveway if you had failed to lock it, or especially if you had left your keys in it? And that’s happened around here….

I’m not a lawyer but I’m sure that insurance companies have language in there somewhere requiring people to use due care and diligence or something like that.

Insurance companies might drop you but they can’t hold you liable because you didn’t park your Mercedes in a garage. Criminals are responsible for criminal activity not owners. I’m also curious to the reason for editing the quote. It was a natural extension of the logic being proposed here.

What this means for anyone (—under Florida law—) who owns a motor vehicle is that you can be held legally liable for property damage and personal injuries caused by a car thief driving your vehicle if you left the keys in the vehicle….Someone stealing your car and causing an accident is a foreseeable harm if you leave the keys in your car.
