Just scored my 4th pair of Advents!

That’s right, my 4th pair. I have two sets of original Smaller Advents and one set of the original Advent Loudspeaker (with the walnut cabinet). All my sets are professionally refurbished and therefore every bit as good as the day they were produced back in the 1970s. I know I’m nuts and can barely find another place in the house to set up yet another receiver but Henry Kloss was godlike to me, and the price was too good to resist. Actually I started looking because I kind of miss using my old Kenwood KR-4070 that I took out of service to use my Fisher 500C (yep, tubes) that I got for myself a year ago Christmas and wanted to have the Kenwood going again. These are the Advent/3–I’ve always liked the original and the smaller but this is just something Henry produced a little later with his original company (Advent), so I have no lack of confidence that they will be everything in accordance with his standards (reliable seller with all testing done). Again, you couldn’t beat the price at just $99–yes for both–($140 out the door with shipping and tax), especially with just about anything along the lines of the originals or smallers, even though still worth it IMO, going for $300-$600 and up.

Despite my desire to do so I never did go away to college, just living in an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (Columbia University area) in the 1970s where I went to CCNY and had my first original pair of the smaller ones (BTW, as a CCNY student you could never get a date with a girl from Barnard, Columbia's women's college. The first thing they would ask was whether you were a Columbia student and as soon as you told the truth that was it!). They were stolen from an apartment I later moved to in the Bronx (mid-late '70s). I never had anything very good after that except some EPIs that were pretty good. Then about 20 years ago I just got the hunch to see whether I could score any of the original Advents (Kloss closed the company in 1981) on eBay and wound up buying the three pairs that I mentioned. Now of course this addition.

Sure! Certainly at the time half the price of Bose and every bit as good, if not better than them or anything else on the market at the time and as they would often say at any price! I haven’t really kept up and suppose that I could be wrong but I’d still put them up against anything out there today. Let me know if I am misguided! Here’s one of their ads from back then (believe it or not, there were a couple of spelling errors, one punctuation error and one instance of sloppy grammar in this ad that I corrected before posting [meaning remains the same]. Probably indicative of their overall honestly). While they would make claims in their ads similar to my opinion like this one does I found all of their ads to be among the most honest and straightforward advertising I’ve ever seen. This one is one of their more brief ones–they also had much longer much more involved ads that were a downright education but figured that those would be a TL;DR for here.

Well, I received them and hooked them up to the Kenwood, and all is copacetic (great shape and sound and hard to believe condition for 50 y.o. stuff!). That Kenwood is just super sweet, both in appearance (see pic), sound and power and beautifully smooth static-free controls (really my favorite with the possible exception of my old Marantz that was also lost along with my original Advents in that burglary many moons ago). Years back I got the Kenwood, all my other Advents, and my Pioneer SX-737 on eBay in great condition and at very reasonable prices (I think I paid about $50 for the Kenwood), but I was looking around on eBay at similar stuff just recently after getting the new Advents and it is currently a complete disaster!🤒 Speakers at $600 or more with no guarantees, receivers with all kinds of stuff missing, at the low end of $300-$400 and some at $1,000 or more! I suppose that I made it just in the Nick of Time.

My brother in law resurrected 2 sets of Advents (with Speakers as close as he could find to the originals). He had purchased some very expensive speakers and was disappointed with them and returned them. Some say that they don't make them like they used to.
