Loblaws has enhanced their website so one can specifically search for "Prepared in Canada" options.
Example: Quaker has many cereal products that qualify as "Prepared in Canada" & use 100% Canadian Oats. For this morning's grocery shop: Life cereal in, Cheerios out.

g121 Its a nice move but it does highlight the fact that many of their own branded PC, No Name, etc. products are not actually not a product of, prepared in or made in Canada.

I realized it many years ago when I'd become so used to buying Pert 2-in-1 shampoo+conditioner and travelling out of the country, even to some US states, and confused by this need to buy shampoo and conditioner in two separate bottles. Do I even need conditioner!? I had no idea since I'd bought it as one for years...

It was owned by Proctor & Gamble though, it's still a US brand. I just think they bottle it here?

urbanriot That would probably put it in the Made in Canada category as opposed to Product of Canada. But I don’t know if there’s any regulatory restrictions around using those labels.

It is not P&G anymore, they sold it in 2006 and it has changed hands twice, most recently in 2021.

The original Pert was just a shampoo.

After around 1987 came Pert Plus (also known as Pert 2 in 1).

I never saw "just plain Pert" shampoo after that---not sure if it was made or not, and in what countries.

Pert is now owned by Sodalis Group which is a multi-national originally from ITALY.

But every time I see Pert Shampoo for sale here in the USA, it is indeed made in Canada.

Yep .. "Prepared in Canada" or "Made in Canada" means at least 51% Canadian whereas "Product of Canada" is at least 98% Canadian.
My Pert bottles say "Made in Canada" ..

Yea I feel like I've been using it for 40 or so years now, it feels like almost forever. This was definitely the shampoo of choice for men for decades after it came out but since then there's been a lot of competition in that market. These days when I go to Shoppers there's a pile of options and I usually get whichever unscented is on sale.

I'm curious where it's made in Canada. Google AI says this:

HRB Brands went bankrupt, bought by The Sodalis Group, and Google AI says this, "The Sodalis Group does not have a factory in Canada" I can't find a factory for either of those companies.

px_eliezer_ Since you ladies are all talking shampoo, I figured I'd join in. :p I have Head & Shoulders and all it says on the bottle is, "Imported for Procter & Gamble, Toronto". I had to look online to find that it's made in China.

They probably have some other company make the product---this is probably the case with most of these brand-name companies that produce so many brands and so many types of products.

Plenty of private-label manufacturers, used by companies such as Loblaw's for their President's Choice products.

I do remember quite clearly now---which I forgot earlier---that after P&G first sold off the Pert brand it was never the same afterwards. Much more watery. I stopped using it at that point.

It does not reveal who actually produces it for them in Canada. HRB Brands still appears to exist in some form, whoever owns the business now.

This was from an in-stock bottle of the "Dry Scalp Care" product at Maxi, owned by Weston, similar to No Frills.

taraf Since you know of him, if I remember correctly, Dr. Schwarcz explained years ago that there is virtually no difference. At the time, his example was Pert Plus, and the explanation was that the conditioner part of the 2-in-1 was encapsulated in another substance (my brain fart, not his explanation that was lacking) that dissolved in the rinse water, after which the conditioner did its job as you rinsed. He presented two pictures of strands of hair produced by a high-powered microscope, and explained that the results were very similar, though the separate products did produce a modestly better end result. He said, based on your preferences and hair type, you would have to decide for yourself whether the separate products were worth the extra time and cost.

MichelR I was curious as I use that too.. Well I'm just fine with imported from China - I buy from temu and Alibaba regularly - generally weening myself off Amazon other than for Canadian products.
