Moffetts yeah the young or inexperienced people call everything WiFi these days. They are like “who do you have for WiFi?” I could be a smart ass and say Ubiquiti… who do you have, Asus, Netgear, TP Link, Eero, etc….
I remember my first “broadband” at the time was in 1998 ish… Bell Atlantic DSL 768k down by 192k up. Thought it was so awesome at the time, big upgrade over AOL dialup. The cable company was just doing a rebuild to HFC then and didn’t offer internet until 2000 or 2001 and by then I was off to college. They did an HFC rebuild in 1997 but it took them a long time to get the return path clean enough to offer modem service. I remember back then I could listen to the techs on a Uniden Bearcat scanner, and they’d be dispatched to go drive around looking for ingress in between calls. The one guy sounded just like Gary Sinese. Not sure if any of those guys stuck around over the years.
Big thing I see on social media these days is 1) price, 2) reliability, 3) service. It used to be a monopoly… whatever cable company that served the area was all you got. Verizon stopped provisioning DSL years ago. Comcast overbuilt, Windstream VDSL pushed PON, t-mobile is a hit in certain parts of our township.
One things for sure, most everyone streams. YouTube or Hulu. Some do OTA, some don’t even watch linear tv. Growing up just about EVERYONE had cable TV in some fashion, even if it was a lower tier with the rest trapped out at the tap. Everyone had a land line too. You don’t see that much anymore. I have cheap VOIP with VoIP.ms and it’s fine, really just have it for a backup if something happens to AT&T cell service. I’m on 1 bar in my kitchen so it’s kinda marginal. WiFi calling helps though.
