Canadian Gas Prices

I have said a number of times that I don’t (usually) drive, but I still tend to pay attention to gas prices if I happen to pass a gas station when I’m out. I have noticed that prices have been high lately (by my standards), but since the latest adventure in Iran started, prices seem to have jumped roughly 10¢/L. Some time last week, during a walk to the grocery store, I noticed that prices were roughly: Regular 87-octane gasoline 147.9; “efficient” diesel 197.9. While out yesterday, I passed a different station, but still Esso, and noticed that regular-87 was almost exactly 10¢/L more; 157.9, if I’m not mistaken. That station doesn’t offer diesel, but I would guess it’s now over $2/L. Are others seeing the same trend elsewhere, or is this just the Quebec tax, and more localised profiteering, with further actual Iran-induced increases to come?

Yea, I saw the same Saturday / Sunday but it cooled off Sunday evening, I’m seeing we are back to 158.9 ~ 161.9.

I’m so glad I gassed up when it hit 142 last week.

Monday morning same petro on glenridge is back to 175.9 as I drove by.

We’ve been back to $1.619/L since Saturday - it started to creep up Wednesday - I saw it go from $1.449 to $1.519 Thursday, and it was $1.559 on Friday afternoon on my way home from grocery shopping. When I took my kid to Piano practice on Saturday it was $1.619/L and it has been there since - was the same on the way off to work this AM. All the hope of getting oil out of the persian gulf quickly without any headaches evaporated quickly and the oil prices (and thus gas futures), went right back up to $100/bbl ($97 for WTI and $105 for Brent) – so the only current relief is the removal of the excise tax of about 10c/L.

Oil prices skyrocketed the last 2 days - back to almost $120/bbl - near their highest right after the whole Iran thing started. There’s still been no clear opening or allowance of transport through the persian gulf. Asian markets are starting to have crude oil shortages at their refineries. Most expectations for a “relatively quick resolution” have faded again. Net result - so much for cheaper gas this summer (at least based on current trends).

The only positive for consumers may be that the UAE announced yesterday it is pulling out of OPEC and as such won’t be hamstrung by their production quotas - they can flood the market if they want (which is what they are intending on doing - pumping their full 5 million bbl/day) - their cost of production is quite low ($30/bbl) so flooding the market when it’s at $120/bbl even if it brings it down to $80/bbl, is a huge windfall for them if they can capitalize on volume and demand.

UAE’s total production capacity is less than ours, and it still has to pass the Strait of Hormuz. It’ll make a difference when the dust settles but not as much as some people are hoping for.

Both UAE and Oman have shipping ports on the Gulf of Oman, south of the straits of hormuz - they have full ability to bypass the troubled area using Fujairah. The countries that don’t have gulf of Oman ports are Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Iraq. Iran has a port city on the gulf of Oman but their infrastructure is not designed to deliver most of their oil there (Chabahar Port) - so they are mostly stuck as well.

8 cent hike coming on Wednesday. Currently 177.9 In Port Colborne (Esso). It’s always at least 5-7 cents cheaper down here than the “average” price, which is currently 185.9

That was the same here in St. Catharines for the late afternoon / early evening pricing, the night-time price adjustment put us around 171.9 - 172.9.

Over the weekend I’d seen 188 at a few places, I think this morning it was 186.

I can see the hike coming - it just hasn’t hit everywhere yet. I got gas at $1.729/L this AM and there were several stations on the west end of Kingston still around that price - but I saw the one station at Division St was $1.889 and one at Hwy 15 was $1.899 – I assume that is the Tuesday price hike percolating up - it is working its way across the city from East to West. Glad I filled up this AM, that’ll get me through at least early next week.

Oil prices per bbl are still jacked WAY up - between $105-$110/bbl this week, so with oil futures there, gas futures are following the same trend and the wholesalers are happily taking their cut, etc. so I’m not seeing much easing this week unless there are giant global geopolitical changes and I’m not holding my breath for that right now.

185.9 morning and 178.9 evening usually at the Petro on my way home.

Yesterday Costco was the normal 174.9 and the Petro at the corner was 173.5. Too bad you don’t get the 2% executive on gas.

With it being 191.9 all the stations I passed on lake st after chiro Wednesday morning.

Steady at about $1.849 around here just about everywhere this morning - a few places had gone up to $1.899 on tuesday but by yesterday most had dropped back to $1.849 or $1.859 and that’s what I’m seeing just about everywhere between Kingston and Cornwall. The only cheap spot is Prescott - they are at $1.729 this morning - so if you’re planning a drive to Ottawa or Montreal from Toronto the next 2 days, that would be a cost saving gas stop (not as cheap as on the res in Tyendinega - they are still $1.599 today - but last time I went by there the lines were long.)
