I have said a number of times that I don’t (usually) drive, but I still tend to pay attention to gas prices if I happen to pass a gas station when I’m out. I have noticed that prices have been high lately (by my standards), but since the latest adventure in Iran started, prices seem to have jumped roughly 10¢/L.

Some time last week, during a walk to the grocery store, I noticed that prices were roughly: Regular 87-octane gasoline 147.9; “efficient” diesel 197.9.

While out yesterday, I passed a different station, but still Esso, and noticed that regular-87 was almost exactly 10¢/L more; 157.9, if I’m not mistaken. That station doesn’t offer diesel, but I would guess it’s now over $2/L. Are others seeing the same trend elsewhere, or is this just the Quebec tax, and more localised profiteering, with further actual Iran-induced increases to come?

It’s global oil prices. About 60% of the world’s oil goes through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently blockaded. We are a net oil producer, but the bitumen they dig up in Alberta isn’t the kind of oil we refine into fuel for cars. The stuff we are set up to refine mostly comes from the oil fields in Newfoundland’s offshore basin and the shale fields in Ontario and Manitoba.

And given the direction things are going in the middle east, we’re not going to see relief from the gas prices any time soon. Knocking Venezuela off the list of producers earlier this year didn’t do the world any favours either. If you’re thinking of buying an EV, now’s the time.

GrumpyCanadian change here was about 20c but it’s since corrected some. Last week I paid $1.169/L - on Monday it was $1.399/L but I didn’t need any then. I needed to fill this morning and most stations had returned to about $1.349/L – so it went up 23c on Monday but it’s only up 18c as of today. I expect it to fluctuate between $1.35 and 1.50 here until the are other “developments” in oil prices

It was $1.19 a few weeks ago and yesterday went up to 156.9 here in BC. 🤮👎

GrumpyCanadian all around $1.40 in St Catharines, few were $1.43 this morning when I drove past but now $1.39. That is for regular.

Dks01 Does that represent an increase, as of about a week ago? Even before the recent increases, it was generally higher than that here (higher taxes and provincial carbon-pricing still in effect, in addition to other regional variations).

Somewhat-Reticent I knew of that thread, though I ignored it. Firstly, we don’t buy our combustibles in gallons. Secondly, for whatever regulatory reasons, or due to whichever subsidies, prices are generally always significantly lower south of the border. That is likely part of the reason that many of you see no problem with large, polluting guzzlers that would send the average person into bankruptcy in England or France (slightly better, but not by much, in terms of cost here; whether that is really “better” is debatable). It might be interesting to compare, if there is specific discussion of recent increases, but your prices still don’t reflect the true cost of using that much fuel.

Just when I thought it was bad enough, on my morning walk to the metro station, I noticed that it has increased some more. Today, regular-87 was 161.9/L at the nearby Shell station, and 165.9 at Esso. With the ongoing mess, I doubt that will be as high as it goes.

taraf This sort of thing is why I wasn’t entirely against the idea of Energy East. Some years ago (Harper years?), there was some talk of exactly that: sending Alberta sludge to appropriately-equipped refineries here and in New Brunswick (I think I have that one right), so we didn’t have to be so reliant on others to turn our raw materials into something we can use, and without it having to pass through any territory where anyone else can hinder or stop the flow. It’s a shame the idea never got off the ground… or, really, under it.

That would require either retooling the existing refineries or building new ones. Our refineries in the east are mostly set up for light/sweet, rather than heavy/sour. Honestly, the Alberta sludge would be more useful as a replacement for asphalt for road repair than it would be to fuel our cars. It isn’t a squirting derrick in Alberta like you picture in movies: “tar sands” is an accurate description of what’s actually there.

Energy East would let them export their stuff to markets on the Atlantic instead of just the Pacific, but it wouldn’t solve a supply issue in Ontario or New Brunswick. Our way out of this isn’t more oil, it’s to double down on renewables & electric cars. The rest of the world has figured this out, and the sooner Alberta realizes that the market for oil is rapidly disappearing the better.

The nearest station had been at 144.9 for several days (maybe a couple of weeks) and, according to Gasbuddy, it’s 149.9 this morning.

Mobil was $139.9 this morning while Petro Canada across the street was $149.9.

Diesel, which I will need before I trade in on Monday, is $186.9 across the street from work.
