For me, I prefer Rocky Linux with KVM and LXC partially because I don't want a storage limit on my LXC containers.

I host Tor relays, Nextcloud, EVE-NG, and a few throwaway containers to test stuff, most recently FreeRADIUS.

Used to run everything on ESXi until Hock Tan bought VMware. Had a full VMware stack in my homelab minus VSAN and NSX. Horizon, vCenter, etc.

Today I'm on PVE. It's in some ways better, and in some ways worse. I can live with it. I like that it's foundation is just plain Debian, and that the underlying management plane design is so simple. They really took the most pragmatic approach with most things i.e migration and replication uses key-based SSH. I don't like the lack of polish in the GUI and sometimes extremely limited options for storage migration, but performance is good and the price is right!

Zenit_IIfx How has FreeIPA been? The biggest issue I have found with any AD replacement is the complexity of getting replication running between controllers.

Zenit_IIfx BCM, nice! I kind of regret not picking one up when it was retired at work a few years back. How do you use it/what for?

ropeguru it is reliable if you follow Red Hats guidance on deployment topology. No more than 4 CA master replicas. More than that and locking is a problem. I run some big IPA domains for work, so I’ve gotten pretty well versed in troubleshooting it. It is more temperamental than AD, but a nice solution for a Linux only environment.

I haven't had that issue with FreeIPA - I use it in my homelab & at work. As long as there's connectivity on the needed ports, you install it as a client on the replica, then add it to the appropriate group, and run ipa-replica-install.

Zenit_IIfx Thanks.. I have just been running WIndows Server and resetting the 6 month license then when I get close to the max number of resets, I just build a new server and add the to the domain.

Small network so I may just try and build out some FreeIPA and either start over, or if I can, add to my current then migrate off the Windows servers.
