Heat84 The New River Tunnel goes under a river. Isn’t the New River actually a canal?
At one time it was two small creeks, the north fork and the south fork, the south fork was widened to allow for boat travel west into where Lauderdale was expanding more or less ending at the boat yards to the west of where I-95 is now, from there it was widened by the South Florida Water Mis-Management District to be used to drain the Everglades allowing places like Weston and Sawgrass to be developed.
The dream was to drain the Everglades west of 27 to allow for more development but the Feds and nature blocked that because East Broward well began pulling salt water as far west as 441 damaging the aquifer, the developers and their cronies failed to understand drinking water in Broward and Dade to an extent comes from the Everglades swamps filtering through the soil recharging the aquifer and if the glades where paved over there would be almost no drinking water for people living in Broward.
As such development west of 27 is banned and the SFWMD and the Corps of Engineers are still cleaning up the mess created by over-development back in the late 70′ early 80’s.
