Docsis 3.1 to 4 Upgrade?

My condo is a series of 4-6 unit buildings converted from apartments long ago. Xfinity is deployed throughout with Docsis 3.1 on coax. I have the gigabit non-symmetric service. Google tried to sell us on Google fiber, but the management rejected it, since it involved a lot of digging, and wiring along the back walls walls with penetrations into the units. This is in Atlanta, one of the cities where Xfinity is doing Docsis 4 deployments. Is it likely that Xfinity will be able to do this upgrade without the same Google Fiber issues?

kmand Yes D4 doesn't require a full rebuilt of Coax. Maybe some small chunks need to be fixed to pass full spectrum.

kmand What upload speeds do they offer now? If only 42ish mbps, then they haven't started the mid-split upgrade yet. If they haven't started the mid-split upgrade its possible they will wait and to the D4.0 FDX, which is compatible with mid-split D3.1 modems and the new upcoming D4 modems. It all runs on coax cable so nothing to worry about rewiring the condo.

Apartment and condominium complexes, are usually last to be upgraded to Mid-Split, or DOCSIS 4.0 FDX. I know someone going through the same thing in Oregon. The whole area around his apartment complex was upgraded to Mid-Split. While his apartment complex is still on Sub-Split.

Who knows if they will do D4 though. If you already got mid split your likely in for a long wait as they likely won't have replacing all the amps with FDX hardware high on their priority list. They can upgrade scattered neighborhoods still without midsplit to a 4 deployment and still call your city is a DOCSIS 4 market.

Yes, its 40ish mbps up, 1.2gb down. So I assume that means not midsplit. So I guess I wait for D4.0 FDX with the expectation of little or no premises change.

Well its two months later, still no news from Comcast. Anyone know any development in Atlanta (actually in Decatur, not far from downtown Decatur).

Oh, hell you ain’t going to hear anything. Best guess is like me. Well, you pass up a near 500K metro area for midsplit…with fiber providers available…maybe just got to go 4.0.

But given their latest quarterly statement they are damn stupid.

Much of that has to do with service contract lengths, access rights, and individual unit rewire requirement negotiations .
