Feel free to delete if this is redundant, I wanted to capture the Comcast approved modem list that @badtlc4 started - hats off! (is he/she here, sorry I don't know them!)

Hats off to Hitron for getting their 2.5Gbps modem added so quickly.

EDIT: rolled back to just Hitron CODA as of 9/20/23. Updated image added.

Comcast updated there device list again, from 03/06/25 to 03/25/25. No change to Next Gen Speed Tier device list. They added the Arris G18, Netgear C6230 that they removed from the 03/06/25 list. Lol, and they finally updated the Last Updated date at the bottom of the list, with the correct date.

The version in the first post appears to be outdated, though I can’t download it. The latest version was posted September 18, 2024 based on the date in the file, though it says last updated on June 26 at the bottom.

I know it’s new because the CODA56 is now on the recommended device list in addition to the nextgen list. It used to just be on the nextgen list.

I’ll never understand why the S33 is still on the recommended list yet they refused to certify it for mid-split. I’m on fiber now so it’s all moot for me, but it’ll forever be one of those questions rattling around in my head.

It’s something to do with arris putting out the s34 that got certified, which is basically the literal exact same modem.
Probably just because they wanted an excuse to sell more devices.

The S34 is exactly the same as the S33, just a “new” model that is certified for mid-split.

Have to throw out your S33 and buy the S34 lol

And with DOCSIS 4.0 coming, it’s already obsolete anyway.

SpottedCat The recommended list is a backward looking metric not forward. Recommended comes from automatic monitoring of their entire network and taking the devices with the least amount of issues over a specific period of time. it really has nothing to do with recommending based on future capabilities. It is just recommending based on “hey, these modems have had the fewest issues recently according to our network monitoring data.” Now whether that data can differentiate between actual modem issues or network issues separate of the modem, I can’t find any details on that.

That’s exactly what they wanted to do, sell you a nice new shiny modem. Arris/Vantiva make money selling new devices, not supporting old devices indefinitely. Netgear did the same exact thing, when they came out with the CM2500 and CM3000 for Mid-Split. Netgear chose not to certify there CM2000 for Mid-Split.

Man-of-Leisure And yeah, that’s it. I felt betrayed, so no way in hell I was going to buy an S34. I bought a CODA56 instead and used it happily for over a year.

They should really rethink their strategy. If a company screws me over like that by refusing to support their product, I’m not buying from the same company again.

Retail modems are a very tiny percentage of their business, and probably will go away entirely at some point.

Most modems are sold directly to ISPs to be provided to customers that way.

Outside of the US, most cable companies don’t even let you use your own modem.

Rogers in Canada just gives everyone a free XB6,7,8.

That seems to be the way we’re headed in the US also with DOCSIS 4.0.

Charter already gives everyone a free modem, and Comcast will be giving everyone a free XB10 in 4.0 areas.

I do agree with you, but some of the problem lies with Comcast on how there rolling out there upgrades. And not keeping there customers informed on what upgrades there going to get. Like when is your area going to get DOCSIS 3.1 Mid-Split, and how long is going to remain on DOCSIS 3.1 Mid-Split, before going to DOCSIS 4.0. I know some of the DOCSIS 3.1 areas, were upgraded and went straight to DOCSIS 4.0. It would be pretty messed up if someone went out and bought a new modem for DOCSIS 3.1 Mid-Split. And then a few months later, turn on DOCSIS 4.0, making your new modem useless. I paid $120 for my CODA56, and have been on Mid-Split for 1 year 3 months now. It would’ve cost me $225 to rent there modem at this point. If Xfinity upgraded to DOCSIS 4.0, or if AT&T Fiber came to my area, I wouldn’t be upset for buying my CODA56.

Not yet. It is unclear if Netgear has attempted (or wishes) to request and pay for certification testing for high-split with those operators.

Yeah, the only major retail brands that aren’t also leased by Comcast is NETGEAR and what had been “Zoom Telephonics,” which later ended up merging with Minim, (with products using the Motorola brand-name) which then went out-of-business in 2023, leaving “Premier LogiTech” to acquire the Motorola name last year:

That’s generally why they recommend you just use their modems instead of buying your own. They give you a new one for free when you sign up for a speed tier that requires a new modem.

If you want 4.0, you’re required to use their modem anyway.

You can still use your own modem in 4.0 upgraded areas, but you’ll be stuck on 3.0 or 3.1 speeds.

People won’t be forced onto 4.0, only if you request one of the new symmetrical speed tiers.
