I don't see any need to favor one over the other, although LibreOffice is certainly better known and more established. I must have a dozen office suites, both paid and open source, including but probably not limited to, these two, MS Office, since I can't stand Larry Ellison the last version of OpenOffice by Sun, three Ashampoo suites, Lotus SmartSuite, WordPerfect Office X8 and 2021, and even my old DOS suite that I run with DOSBox, Better Working Eight-in-One. Another open source one that is real interesting and currently in Alpha 5 that you might not have heard of is Rizonesoft Office.
I certainly agree that open source is the way to go wherever possible, since development is based on dedication to produce the best product and therefore not subject to the pressures of the profit motive that so often leads to cutting corners.
