Direct-to-device (D2D) capabilities are becoming less of a differentiator and more of a table stakes feature in mobile devices.
The latest example is Skylo’s new agreement with Charter Communications and Comcast, operators that offer mobile services through an MVNO pact with Verizon, which has been fleshing out its D2D strategy with partners that include Skylo and AST SpaceMobile.
The hook up between Charter and Comcast with Skylo will enable the operators to keep devices connected in areas that are out of reach of terrestrial cellular networks, Wi-Fi connections and (in relatively few instances) CBRS connections.
Initially, customers of Charter’s Spectrum Mobile and Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile will be able to tap into Skylo’s satellite platform to send and receive SMS text messages via Samsung Galaxy S25 and Google Pixel 9 devices “in the coming weeks.” Skylo plans to make its service available on additional devices down the road. Verizon announced this week it is also phasing in this capability on those devices over the next two weeks.
The Skylo connection will build on D2D-based emergency messaging capabilities that Spectrum Mobile and Xfinity Mobile customers have today on select Apple and Google devices that are provided directly by the manufacturers. For example, satellite-based services are available to Spectrum Mobile and Xfinity Mobile customers through devices such as the iPhone 14, 15 and 16 that run iOS 18.
“We are delivering cutting-edge technology that continues to empower our customers with the confidence that their communication needs are always met, no matter where they are,” Danny Bowman, EVP of product at Charter, said in a statement.
The new agreements give Skylo access to a pair of cable operators that ended 2024 with a total of 17.7 million mobile lines – Charter had 9.88 million mobile lines at the end of Q4 2024 while Comcast had 7.82 million.
Coming off its recent $30 million funding round, Skylo is now looking to expand the reach of its D2D platform and enable additional functions and capabilities that can be supported by mobile phones via satellite. Skylo, which counts satellite partners such as Viasat, Inmarsat, EchoStar, Strigo and Ligado, says its platform is capable of supporting more than 1 billion devices worldwide.
Adding D2D capabilities will help Comcast and Charter stay competitive with features that its mobile competitors AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile already offer. …
