The issue is that she did find out the truth about her actual heritage but then made efforts to hide it. She built her reputation and identity around this narrative only to find out that was all wrong was just too much to coup, her solution was to cover it up.
It is unfortunate because act negates the positive work she was doing to raise awareness of native issues - more than that, issues of basic human rights and dignity.
