dave Wait a sec - you mean that guy who says "time to make the donuts" is not actually in the back room at my local DD franchise mixing fresh dough every morning?
In the early 90's that was basically me. I worked in a family owned neighborhood bakery. I fried thousands and thousands of doughnuts while I worked there. Not including the many Polish bow tie cookies, also known as Chrusciki or Kruschicki. During the holidays I would fry enough Kruschicki to fill dozens of big rolling bread racks until they were practically over flowing.
When I would come home, my clothes would smell all sugary and sweet. The smell would come off of me like a cologne. People would tell me I smell so good. But after working at the bakery for awhile, I couldn't stand the smell. It would make me a little sick.
The summers were brutal. The heat coming off the big oven and standing/working over hot oil fryers was not fun. I started work at midnight and it was usually still hot outside.
The bonus was that I got to eat all the doughnuts and bakery stuff that I wanted for free. I gained a bit of weight while working there. 🙂
