As a teen in the 70's I was a rocker and in a few bands. I wasn't too bad. The thrill of helping people enjoy music and the girls were a great novelty in the beginning, but it got old quickly.
Then a catastrophe happened. All my gear, worth a LOT of money, was stolen. twice again in later life it happened again.
I gave up music and went into science, but the bug also beckoned me back.
At 62 years old, my friends convinced me to play again. My shrink recommended it for therapy (I have PTSD and anxiety). Not only were they right, but it has become really important to me. If I go too long without studying and playing, I'm miserable. It's good for me.
This is why I advocate everyone pick up an instrument of their liking, you never know what animal is lurking inside of you. I grew up in a semi musical family but I took it further than anyone else.
If you want pointers on picking up an instrument or explanations, I'm not from Juliard or anything, but I do know a bit.
The only class I got A's in as a kid was music, I failed all the way through school (I was homeless through all of high school). It's sad that I grew up being told that I was mentally R. It turned out that I was the opposite but that I had learning hurdles. I went on years later to get studies in physics and electronics and optics. Only 9% of my class graduated, the standards were very high. Even those that failed went on to get good jobs. My school was special.
But music was a back seat item until I became too old to do science any longer.
I don't know about you, but I have to keep learning and studying or I get depressed. I hope I start a band in the coming years.
