Once it was online, did its updates, which prompted to install a new version. Test Mule would be Arceus, my i9 system at this time.

The heck is sudo? and why does everyone on video pronounce it “soo-doo?” is it a jetski? I just want it to not be in rainbow vomit mode all the time 🤦

I’m surprised the rules didn’t come pre-loaded as you installed it from the software manager, that being said I’ve never had much luck with OpenRGB.

Both options (running OpenRGB as root/SU or installing UDEV rules via script) will involve the command line. IMO sudo openrgb (assuming open RGB is the command) will be easier so you might as well try that first.

codezer0 Seeing it’s app store for the first time, and saw a few familiar entries. Loading up Steam and trying out ut99… At first impression, finding it won’t give a display at all with the opengl renderer. Yet worked with the d3d renderer. Out of any environment where I didn’t expect that behavior, it’d be here. Unfortunately, having to reconfigure it every other day is a peeve.

Most likely the game is working through Proton. So it’s basically running the Windows version of the game, which means it would use Direct3D.

Yes, you have to do that on Linux to install and upgrade software. That’s by design. You’ll have to get used to typing in your password a lot. There are ways to get around it, but they are not recommended.

codezer0 Spot Open RGB being available through said app store; download it, to help me manage lights. And running into another quandary that makes no sense to me and has me going in circles.

It downloads and installs, then when I launch the program, it tells me it needs some kind of rules set, and to run it as root. If I right click, I see no such option… I thought being admin was enough? What the hell.

It is not enough. This is related to the password issue above. To change system files you need to have elevated privileges.

I’m not sure the issue you’re running into, but in Linux Mint Cinnamon, when you are using your file browser you can right click on the empty space in a folder and select ‘Open as Root’. This will give you elevated privileges to modify something, if you need to.

I just tried installing OpenRGB from the Software Manager. Only the Flatpak version is available. So that’s why you are getting that message.

codezer0 I go and download the linked script file it instructs me to, but all that happens when I click on it is it just opens in notepad. Right clicking for context gives me no clue of what the hell to do next to make this work.

I took a quick look. It downloads an .sh file file for you. So to get it to run, you have to make it executable. You can make the file executable by right-clicking on it, selecting ‘Properties’ and then under the ‘Permissions’ tab, you can check the box that says ‘Allow executing file as a program’. Then when you try and double-click on it next time, you have some options to run the file.

This is a situation where it is better to use the command line.

In fact, taking a quick look at the script, it’s going to require the command line because I don’t think it will be able to do anything unless you enter your password.

It just has special infamy for me in Linux because of how it’s endemic that for the last twenty some years, ANY kind of troubleshooting on Any variant of Linux, it automatically starts with the dreaded three words Open Up Terminal. 🥶😰

After years distro-hopping, I settled on a distro with fair support,
though lately it’s become a bit prickly. And I don’t use support much.
Based on DebIan, not ‘Ububu’. Unsure if it has a gamer version as such.
But I digress.

This is done because it’s the easiest way to troubleshoot. Telling someone how to navigate through menus and popups and icons is difficult and people don’t always have inconsistent setups. With a command line, someone can tell you what to do easily, and then the command line also can provide output that people can use to help figure out what the issue is.

The issue is ‘openrgb’ won’t work in the terminal because the Flatpak version has been installed.

codezer0 I never wanted to deal with a command line. That is a method of interaction that deserves to be maligned like the dark ages and buried in hell.

In this case you will have to. The .sh file you downloaded will ask for your password when you run it. So even if you have the .sh file set to be executable, if you just click ‘Run’ it won’t do anything. You will need to ‘Run in Terminal’ so you have the opportunity to enter your password so that the script can make the required changes.

codezer0 I don’t really want to send you down a rabbit hole because I won’t be available until Thursday, but can you right click on OpenRGB in the menu and click on properties? I should show the correct command there. You can post another screen shot of the properties screen if that works for you.

urbanriot At first I was looking towards bazzite since some youtubers were saying about how it was basically the closest we’ll ever get to a widely available SteamOS.

Problem is, after install, it would refuse to boot with secureboot enabled. And you kinda need secure boot for resizable bar to work. No matter how many times I (re)entered the dumb default password offered in the support article, it never made whatever key it needed right, and just block me from booting the thing.

From everything I could find online, Mint seemed like the one meant for newbies. While anything arch based was a “compile it yourself” nightmare bastard scenario. So the moment any of the previously mentioned distros even MENTIONED arch, I was out.

I WAS hoping to not have to endure the misery of more command line bullshit. So for now the system stays off until it learns to behave.

ElQuintron I have tried right clicking for properties. It won’t let me see what directory it is in. Hell, I couldn’t even FIND the damn program at all. Like the system itself is gaslighting me into thinking i never installed it, even though it’s showing as installed and I could launch it from the start menu it provides. The whole thing doesn’t make any sense to me, and I really don’t tolerate an OS trying to gaslight me in any direction.

It should not be this damn hard, to run Open RGB.

What made you pick this distro?

Is there an easier way to choose a Linux distro, like a site that has a way to click through all the flavors? I’ve been using FreeBSD for years but it’s limited in a few areas and I’ve been meaning to load Linux up on a few older systems but it’s impossible to choose a distro because there’s so many and my time is so limited.

By “the start menu it provides” do you mean there’s an added start menu entry?
If so, I’d try right-clicking on that and look for its command-line invocation.
( Command-line can be very picky about spelling & capitalization. )

the moment any of the previously mentioned distros even MENTIONED Arch, I was out.

Newbies often avoid base distros like Arch, DebIan, Ubuntu, Fedora or Gentoo,
and favor derivatives thereof.
DistroWatch is one resource, just don’t confuse ratings there with usage.
It’s been common to download OS images and test ’em live from USB drive,
without bothering with installation, as long as there’s ample RAM.

I’m already wanting to (mentally) melt down over how stupid this all is to me.

I never wanted to deal with a command line. That is a method of interaction that deserves to be maligned like the dark ages and buried in hell.

If this can’t be solved without it, I’d almost rather just nuke the install and find something else that would actually behave. I already am peeved with the constant password prompting; I wanted no such thing. Even on windows 10 and 11, I was able to get around not having a password for my PERSONAL computers. This is just eroding what patience I am able to spare.

Did you ever resolve this problem? After this thread I installed Linux Mint XFCE and I’ve been fairly happy with it but also annoyed at the password prompts, especially the keyring prompts when working with the browser.

Okay, so I tried to get OpenRGB installed using the flatpak, and I think it might just be broken.

I followed the instructions and ran the script and it still has the udev pop-up.

It looks like other people have the same problem:

I didn’t try it, but probably your best bet is to just go to their other downloads and get the .deb installer.

I’m assuming you’ll need the Linux amd64 (Debian Bookworm .deb) installer.

If you can get this working, you’ll be able to avoid the command line altogether, Linux Mint is a Debian derivative, and the .deb file should open with your software installer.

ElQuintron Looks like that prediction, was a success. Even got the hardware monitor plugin working. What is strange, is that it’s only detecting the RAM, not the motherboard’s own RGB 🤷

Seems in terms of added load, 0.9 on Linux and 1.0rc on Windows is pretty much identical. 0.9 on windows got really laggy with the hardware monitor plug-in.
