Currently I have a 6 bay QNAP 653D NAS (Intel Celeron J4125 4 cores / 4 threads) with 16GB of DDR4 SODIMM RAM, six 14TB WD Red HDD’s and a connected ProBox 8 bay DAS fully populated with 8TB WD Red drives in RAID 50.
This is backed up by a newer UGreen DXP8800 Plus NAS (Intel Core i5 1235U 10 cores / 12 threads) with 16GB of DDR5 SODIMM RAM, six 16TB WD Red + two 20TB WD Red HDD’s and two connected 5 Bay DAS units in RAID 5 respectively populated with 4TB HGST drives.
Recently the QNAP died but it turned out to just be a failed external power brick which was easily sorted with a replacement. This is all for one location though.
I have another location that has a Synology DS1815+ with a similar data set but it has lower capacity and is slowly becoming more and more out of sync. So I’ll have to work on that for an offsite backup.
Initially I wanted just another server / NAS and this system will certainly be that eventually. However, I’m not really happy with the OS options and I am willing to try some of the options out there when I have the time. I rather like QNAP QTS and Synology DSM but on a DIY system those aren’t really options. I have tried XPEnology many moons ago but that isn’t a viable solution IMO. I’ve never really played with ProxMox so why not give it a go. It may actually help in making a decision on OS.
There will come a time when I have to press this hardware into service but now isn’t necessarily that time. I can experiment a little while longer. Sourcing more hard drives could be a bit of a problem in todays hardware landscape / economy though.
This could have been done and dusted a while ago but I often don’t have the time, elastically so when everything is working.
