Let me do a general reply. Stop with the Political Junk Stuff for the web site shutting down and the reason for the abrupt closure. Here are the actual true facts given to me in private quoted communications from a couple of the Moderators I knew and had relationship with when I was a site Moderator at DSLr. The Money and income had run out and the Billing exceeded income The past billings was not Paid. Site Maintenance was not performed and too much was broken Cabana was doing the site management Justin has abandoned the site and she was tired of the responsibility and work load. Too many people were posting about the eminent shutting because of my relating it to them and others relating it also to the other members about the Secret Closure and Cabana was moving the postings to the "Out of Site Forum" it seemed this series of postings to have pissed Her off so she retaliated with the promised no released Killing. It was directed by Cabana not to sell and not to transfer Management and Ownership to anybody. This is not Politically motivated there was no politics involved it was Finances, Poor Management, Maintenance not being performed, Cabana was Overworked Without Remuneration and with a Pissed Off Driven EGO focus No Politics Involved Mentioned and Pointed Too just Undeniable Poor Management Poor Oversight and a lack of Responsibility It was Discussed in early December with the Moderators and I was told then by a Mod and started disseminating it then to others but had to be known to management prior to that December meeting what was taking place. 9a. At that time it was decided that in Early January of the New Year to Shutter and Kill the site Secretly without a Warning. 10.

When you plan a secret event that you know will piss people off, it seems a bit superfluous to get pissed off when some of the pissed-off are sufficiently pissed-off that they don't keep the secret quite so secret.

And I for one am grateful that he-who-shall-not-be-named gave me the heads-up.

So IOW she's pissed that it leaked out and that we didn't feel more betrayed and backstabbed than we already do. And what drives someone to that level of anger and vengeance is all due to the site's high cost and maintenance requirements? I find that hard to believe. If that's all it was about the site would have come down a long time ago.

Also if the site leadership needed money all they had to do was ask the userbase for some donations and they would have been showered with cash. I certainly would have been willing to chip in like $50 a year or something. Restart the "Premium Member" level and make it a subscription requiring recurring $10 monthly payments. They had plenty of cash flow options they could have pursued. You had to give enough of a s**t to pursue them though.

Just noting that's a "whois" on a netblock Liquid Web owns, it's not indicative of any way of site ownership. You'd want unredacted domain whois info to get something approximating site ownership...

As others said, very unlikely that a hosting company would coup a customer, I don't think that's ever happened at any sort of legitimate hosting operation (and LW has generally had a very good rep compared to some of the fly-by-night operators).

The whole story sounds nuts - but also not too nuts because the little peeks you'd get at the mod team did sometimes hint at some very cliquey and weird "us vs. them" attitudes. I really don't get insisting on not selling the site or even taking the "crazy" step of proposing payment via Patreon or similar. Much more expensive endeavors have been crowd-funded, and given how people are burning out on massive social media sites like twitter, FB and Insta, not a totally crazy idea.

I don"t know if Liquid is fronting for someone, doing it themselves or any combination of that or if its just " The Spirit in The Sky" Liquid Web is deeply involved up to it's Neck
In fact they are involved because they rented the Server to Dslreports and Dslr was and is still hosted on it and they have possession of that sever along with all its contents which is the Site's program and its Data. The IP address used to link to the Read only and 5 minute functionality also belongs to LW

They had a money making website. Not that I want to give them any ideas, if they are lurking here. However, this was a major cash site. They could have reinstated the Premium Membership and made the Pub and a few other forums a premium level access only.

The DSLR site could be argued to be an informal investment by some portion of its membership. Whether this Karen Cabana gained control by devious action or by just being the last person standing, she might have had a fiduciary duty to maximize the site's value by looking into selling it, or transferring it to some other ownership. Killing it out of spite, if that was the case, suggests that some maturity was lacking.

The site was held and privately owned so they had no fiduciary duty they could do as they please and legally answered only to themselves

What could be somewhat concerning is people's private data from the direct forums.

Not sure if they even kept the stuff from long shut down direct forum like TekSavvy one that was shut down in 2020.

How about first hand Knowledge on my part and private independent conversations from two Moderators who were completely present and involved with the process. Along with 25 years of deep involvement in Dslr and as an original of the first 6 site moderator for 3 years and a forum moderator on and off for 24.years.
In the early site years I helped to build the Damn site
Along with being known by many others for my Veracity and no BS reputation.

InternetJeff Did you bother to ask your undocumented supposed moderator source why he did not tell you in advance about the closing and what his involvement in it was. After all he knew at the same as myself in early December too and chose to remain silent. To get him to tell you anything you still had to ask and it was not given freely
