Just noting that's a "whois" on a netblock Liquid Web owns, it's not indicative of any way of site ownership. You'd want unredacted domain whois info to get something approximating site ownership...
As others said, very unlikely that a hosting company would coup a customer, I don't think that's ever happened at any sort of legitimate hosting operation (and LW has generally had a very good rep compared to some of the fly-by-night operators).
The whole story sounds nuts - but also not too nuts because the little peeks you'd get at the mod team did sometimes hint at some very cliquey and weird "us vs. them" attitudes. I really don't get insisting on not selling the site or even taking the "crazy" step of proposing payment via Patreon or similar. Much more expensive endeavors have been crowd-funded, and given how people are burning out on massive social media sites like twitter, FB and Insta, not a totally crazy idea.
