GrumpyCanadian Out of curiosity, has anyone else noticed the TV commercials from Hanwha? They have already been running for a while on a few local channels in Quebec markets. I guess they’re trying to develop name recognition, maybe hoping that that would lead to Canadians favouring their offer over the German one (in much the same way that the free American advertising over the past year has turned the majority of Canadians against the F-35).

It’s been a while, but I remember some commercials (mostly printed media; can’t remember if there was anything on TV) during the fighter jet competition that resulted in the F-18, and also for the frigate program in the early ’80s.

HELLFIRE Is this a good thing? Consider that Honda and Toyota are the only manufactures in Canada (not related to american firms) and they also are the only that produce sedans (ie cars). The american manufactures are focused only on SUV crossover trucks, Stellantis is focused on making things that look like those but don’t actually work yet are easy to steal and have a big market overseas. I would hate to dilute the market but as people do buy that brand already perhaps it would be a gain since it would be made here and require at least some local suppliers and such to support the plant.

Ain’t that the million dollar question though? As I posted earlier, SKorean companies offered an unsolicited bid to refinance our military on their tab. Offhand, sounds like a deal to jump for… so where the car plant comes into things, ya got me.

Have to add, the Koreans (different company I believe) are also in the running to to supply the Canadian Armed Forces with self propelled howitzers as well, apparently this competition too is between the Koreans and the Germans (why they’re ignoring the Swedish Archers is unknown)
