Direct fuel injected engines, if they don’t also have port fuel injection, are very unforgiving of lapses in oil changes, even more so if they’re turbocharged. This means using Tier 1 fuel and oil, and rigidly sticking to the maintenance schedule. It also means ensuring that the engine gets to full operating temperature, (oil temp, not coolant temp) every time it’s run, especially in cold weather. And not idling the engine more than it needs to be. All of these will help extend the time when carbon buildup removal is required, if at all.
