IPv6 Support?

Does anyone have any information regarding plans to support IPv6 by Armstrong? I don’t have an urgent need for it, just curious. I’d like to start exploring IPv6 more so it would be helpful if my ISP provided it. (Granted the other fiber ISP in my area does not support it yet either, only the largest of providers have undertaken the huge amount of work to implement and support…)

I have not heard anything. Armstrong has a /28 and /32. Not sure if they can enable IPv6 by request.

That being said, they are probably comfortable continuing to throw most customers behind RFC7793 addresses, and only providing unique public IPv4 addresses upon request. Like most SMBs, I feel like there still isn’t a sense of urgency around IPv6 support yet.

They do a lot of CGNAT until you call and request a standard IPv4 address. I think, like everyone else, it’s all talk that IPv6 is coming but then never really happens.

dslwanter Yeah, I discovered they must tie those requests to your edge devices MAC address, after changing routers I lost routable IPv4. I’m actually trying living under CGNAT to see if it prevents me from anything and so far it has been fine. It does seem to add 1ms of latency, other than that has not caused me any problems with work VPN etc, and the IP geolocation is better on the shared IP…

kirk1233 That makes sense. Your gateway is going to request an address from the DHCP pool. The MAC is the unique identifier. Most gateways have a way to forge the WAN MAC, so you can “copy” it over to a replacement device and retain that functionality.

CG-NAT on modern big iron hardware really shouldn’t have any meaningful impact on performance as long as they’ve built/scaled it to meet demand. All those translations are offloaded to ASICs now. Even just 1ms added latency is surprising to me.
